Well, the rain finally stopped, so we decided to go to the range for a “Play Day.” We took along a few rifles with us to test some loads, and also some pistols.

The Swedes, Enfields and Ross rifles. A rare 1929 m/96, a 1916 Elm stock m/96, a three digit 1900 Mauser converted in 1976 to a CG-63 and was a "Skytte OS" prize rifle, a 1921 m/96 Hemvarnet (Swedish Home Guard) prize rifle, an Italian 6.5mm Vetterli Carbine, a Brazilian 30-06 m/954, a Long Branch No4.Mk1* 3L series, a Lithgow No. 1 Mk III* target rifle, a "special" 1905 Ross Mark II, a 1910 HMS Canada Mark III, and a purpose built .22 No.7 rifle. Not shown is the very accurate 1912 m/96 that we used as a "control" rifle for testing groups; the group shown below is typical of what this rifle will do.

The 1910 is a HMS Canada rifle. The 1905 is a very special one that we both wanted to fire. There will be more on this rifle later, and it WILL be interesting.

SMELLIE and BUFFDOG with Ross Rifles going back to the vehicles. Contrary to many warnings, myths and opinions on the Ross, there were no smoking craters left on the firing point, no ambulances were needed and no SMELLIEs or BUFFDOGs were harmed during the firing of these rifles.

For 71 years old, the old fart can still shoot. One of the targets from an open sighted m/96 6.5x55 1912 Mauser. The Dime measures .70 inch, and a quarter will completely cover this 100 yard group.

Congratulations on getting Smellie out of the "sock closet" Buffdog. (how many pizza's WERE hurt?? :p). As far as the grouping...nay seh bad Smellie!! (I would struggle to get that @ 25yrds with a scope :) but then none of my rifles have fancy silver plaques on the butt stocks :D.

Great pics.

How did the CG 63 shoot?

Quite well. With a bit of load development, it should shoot under an inch at 100 yards. Since last fall I worked some overtime and ended up with about 9 or 10 Swedes and this is the first time I have had to get out on the range. I still have about a dozen or so tht I haven't fired yet so this was a bit of a session to see what some of them would do.

SMELLIE and I just HAD to fire the 1905 Ross and we used his 1910 Ross as a control weapon. The reasons for firing it will become apparent in a couple of months as we are just ending a project we have been working on for over two years.

Thanks for sharing the pics and the story. Nice to see such a fine collection out taking the air and making some noise...not to mention such fine shooting. The perfect time of the year - the snow is gone and the bugs aren't fully out (or were they?)

Looking forward to the story on the Mk II Ross.

I've got a video of my son shooting my 5* earlier this spring. Might have to post it here to further reinforce the point you make that it is possible to fire a Ross, Mk II OR Mk III, without someone losing a body part. :D

Nice pictures. Now I have some faces to go with the names of my tutors. :D

Great shooting.

Lets hear more about this "project"!

We are not quite finished yet, there is one more thing to do. When it is over, we will definitely post the story and some pictures. A few Members here, like RANGE ROVER, TALQUIN and others have an idea and bits and pieces of what we did and are doing, and SMELLIE and I thank them for keeping it to themselves until we break the story. Probably about October we will have finished up, and then we will "let the cat out of the bag."

HINT: It concerns the 1905 Ross! That is why we just HAD to fire it.

Great thread,..and excellent photos,..the lady looks very nice too..!

OMG--now you have done it. You have said something nice about her, and now Smellie and I will hear all about this for a month to come!:)

Actually, Jan was the Spotter, took a lot of the photographs, and was SMELLIE's riflebearer. She also INSISTED on firing the 1905 Ross too, along with anything else she could get her hands on. She loves shooting.

Keeping her out of the ammunition boxes was like trying to keep a Squirrel out of the bird feeder. :)

The two targets at 25 yards are for the pistols. The four targets are at 100 yards. On the picnic bench are four .38 Enfield Mark 1 revolvers and one Webley .38. The actual firing was done well to the left, and the rifles were fired to the left of the 25 yard targets. Picnic benches with the rifles and pistols well back and 25 yards to the right of the firing point for safety. There were only the three of us on the range at the time.

But now that you have been nice to her, we have to do something to bring things back to Normal around here, so we will show you the TWOSTEAM method of countering recoil. When you do not weight a lot, (unlike SMELLIE and Myself, who have enough weight to anchor us down a bit,) you can wrap you legs around the center portion of the bench when you shoot, thus distributing the recoil forces with your shoulder and your butt, with your legs firmly holding your butt on the seat so that the recoil does not send you flying backwards.
