Back around 2001 Robert Paddon was selling a stack of Savage made No4MkI* Enfields at the Vancouver area gun show, for 300 dollars Cdn IIRC.

Did anyone else here pick one of those up, and does anyone have the back story on how these became available, and where they were prior to sale?

He was flogging a lot of nice kit back then too.

I picked up two when I moved to Victoria. Both un-issued, but cozmoline cleaned off. The 1944 had been fired a couple times and was missing mag. The one I kept is a '43 with early stock. Never fired as action so plugged with cozmo it would go "thunk" when dry-fired. Seems a lot of in the grease Savages ended up in Canada after contract cancelled. For some reason they dont have the "collector appeal" up here as LB's do. I've seen them at shows from $700-900 but dont think they sold. I really like mine though.

I agree, I don't get the same feeling looking at a Savage as I do looking at an LB...

The unfired Savage No.4 MKI* rifles were imported into Canada by Century Arms formerly of Montreal, QC. Bought one in 1972 for $20.00 CDN.

Serial number 38C#### would be late 1942. Why would a block of rifles be diverted and never issued just when the war was getting serious?

I've seen the Garand forum members get a proverbial stiffy when they find an arsenal rebuild, and begin to fantasize that it was pulled off the QM rack and and put away especially for them to find today. Balderdash! There is more to the story than just the story.
