I have recently aquired a MINT ruger 44 carbine
for those who have one or had one at some point I was wondering what the best ammo for deer hunting is with this little carbine

I am loading mine with 240 grain HP. I know from my other 44 mags that this is a great round. It will know down a deer out to about 150 yards. You just need to sight in for 100 and test at 50 and 150 to know you over and under holds.

What I would like to know is where are all of these coming from. I hadn't seen one for years and after buying mine two months ago, I would bet a dozen at least have shown up in the EE.

I used to use 240 grain soft points in mine....great little bush gun, and light to boot!

tbrwlf I know what you mean I have been looking for a a 44 carbine for 2yrs and couldnt find one that was either in decent shape or priced outragiously and all of a sudden theres been 3 on the EE in the last few weeks go figure I have heard good things about winchester grey box 240gr hollow points gonna try them when the dealer gets some in only thing they have left is remington 240sp

are/were any of these with the detachable rotory magazine? If so, I'm crying a river! I've been looking for one for years!

id post pics if I knew how LOL im not the computer savy type. mine is the tube fed model and yes they made aclip fed model called the 99/44

Well, the one I had just loved American eagle 240 gr hollow points.
Deer didnt care much for them though, and they never went far either, and a blind man could have followed the blood trail

You could be right about 99/44. I know there are two different version. The first one was called the Deerstalker but they had to change the name due to conflicts with another gun already called that. They upgraded that version and released it as the ruger 44 carbine. Then they stopped making them. Then they started again and it was based on either the 96 or 99 rifle and called the Deerfield 44.

I tried some 240gr winchester SP whitebox ammo on the weekend and the rifle apparently does not like them I am gonna try some 240gr remington SP this weekend hopefully the accuracy is better than a 8 inch group at 50 yards

I bought one in the the 70s. It loved Hornady 265Gr softpoints. Killed deer very well! I put an early aimpoint on it in the 80s. It would do 1 inch groups at 100M!
I miss it
Henry
