Posted same in the optics forum but the response is slow and this is geared specifically toward the AR crowd so here it is!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So the DD V5 should be on its way soon and I will be needing an optic. I dont have experience with either set up but im torn between the EXPS2 with Gen33 3X Magnifier and the Aimpoint micro T-1 with the Aimpoint 3x magnifier.

I know that the Aimpoint set up is smaller and shaves almost 12 ounces off of the weight when compared to the EO-Tech. I dont care about the price difference between the two.

I would like input from those who have used both and who can comment on the quality as well as how much the weight and size differences matter. I will be running the set up with folding BUIS front and rear sights for what its worth.

Oh and my general purpose for now is destroying paper products however I would like to get into competitive action shooting down the road and want the right sight from the get go!

Fire away CGN'ers!

Competition action shooting? I see lots of EOTechs here with a magnifier.

Or go 1-4x and you've got your bases covered :)

Find out the rules of the group you will be shooting with to see what you need to fit into the division you want to be in... That way you're not buying something you won't be allowed to use.

This topic has been done to death, if you use the search function you'll find a ton of posts and information about both optics.

I chose the Eotech (EXPS2-0) recently when mulling over this same decision. My eyesight isn't the greatest, so I find the outer circle very helpful to quickly acquire the general target area. Also found the circle and the larger viewport better with two eyes open operation. YMMV.

I know its probably been covered many times over but I would rather have people give input for my specific configurations, which may have been covered already as well. Too many weak topics get covered over and over every week. Those who read and have constructive input will still want to post their opinions.

Im not too familiar with the different restrictions on different types of action shooting and if one config doesnt cut it then ill change it up. So for the sake of argument lets say its just for recreational shooting!

As for the 1-4X optic, I only see the Elcan DR as an option. I want quality and it appears to be the only one in a compact package. That being said at almost 2 grand its a little on the high side of what I would be willing to spend.

If you are only using it at the range then the weight and reliability aren't really a huge concern.

Some people prefer the EoTech reticle. I have many Aimpoints (all but one are Micros) but also have one carbine setup with an EoTech. Right now I'm waiting on a new battery compartment from Wolverine to replace the current one that had the terminals fall out. Battery compartment and battery drain issues plague the EoTech line.

The Aimpoint setup is lighter, more reliable, and has longer battery life.

I've run the 3x Magnifier with my T1s in the Aimpoint mount (Iraq) and Larue flip-to-side mount (Afghan). Originally I thought the Aimpoint mount was a better design, but after using the Larue mount I was a convert. With the Larue mount you retain the ability to remove the magnifier completely and stow it, but can quickly switch between 1x and 3x for different distances or PID.

If I were buying a new general purpose optic setup I'd get a 2MOA T1 in Larue mount with an Aimpoint 3x in Larue flip-to-side mount.

This post probably won't help your decision so you can feel free to disregard it with my apologies if I am too OT, I just thought I would post my thoughts on the sights I have in the brands mentioned.

I have an EOTech XPS2 and Aimpoint PRO, I bought them just to check them out because of all of the buzz, and I don't like either on my .223's.
They were on my rifles for less than a day before they were pulled back off and replaced with the original LPT 1x and Mk-AR 3-9x scopes I had mounted.
All of that said, I don't own a DD, I have an RA XCR-L and H&K SL8-5 for .223's. FYI I shoot paper only.
The EOTech was put onto my Mossberg SPX, the PRO is back in its box.

I looked at the T1 but bought the PRO because 4 MOA vs 2 MOA dot and 20mm? vs 30mm tube.
IIRC the only diff. between the XPS2 and EXPS2 is co-witness and QD.
If I had to choose between the two for plain 1x I would go with the EOTech, I like it more (hate it less?). The Aimpoint somehow feels cheaper, and its biggest drawback imho is the lone dot without a circle is slower for target acquisition.
I can't comment with the magnifiers as I haven't tried both models you mentioned.

Aimpoint PRO (no idea on relevancy to T1):
- Difficult to manage tight rubber web for holding the caps. (not T1 relevant)
- The mount pieces/spacers are poorly machined with bad tolerances and don't fit snug so the scope is always slightly canted.
- Would have liked a circle around the miniscule dot, too slow to acquire.
- Off axis view angle is less than 5 degrees, no better than an AR scope.
- Bad CR1/3N battery choice almost impossible to find in Canada. (not T1 relevant)
+ Good battery life.

EOTech XPS2:
- Swimming laser pixels in reticle.
- Reticle brightness always resets to default on power-up.
- Actually quite large.
- Off axis view angle is less than 5 degrees, no better than an AR scope.
- Ok battery life. + Bulk Streamlight batteries are cheap and popular.

The Elcan's also 1.5lbs in weight and have a mount system that I do not like (exposed adjustment).

How compact is compact enough?
What is your price range?
Do you want/need variable magnification?

Personally, if you are mainly shooting paper I would go with a tactical scope, not a red-dot/holo, jmo. Some of the tactical scopes are not that much larger, the CQ/T is only 8 inches long for example.

If you are looking for a 1-4x var (or something around that) but can safely move out of the red-dot mini size preference to include tactical scopes, some of what you have available:
- Burris MTAC 1-4
- Leupold VX-R
- Leupold Mark AR
- Leupold Mark 4 CQ/T
- Leupold Mark 4 MR/T
- Zeiss RSAS
- Zeiss Victory HT
- Trijicon AccuPoint
- Trijicon ACOG
- Leupold HAMR
- Schmidt & Bender ShortDot etc.

Personally, I find the smaller tactical scopes to be higher quality than the Aimpoint/EOTech gear, especially the glass. Many tactical scopes also include lit reticles, and have fixed reticles so they work even without batteries. The only limiting value is no unlimited eye relief (many are typ. 2-4 inch), but red-dots only have a <5 degree off-axis view, so you need near-cheek-weld with them anyway (imho). Especially if you are mainly shooting paper.

On my .223 rifles I currently have a Leupold Prismatic Tactical 1x and a Leupold Mark AR 3-9x40.
This fall I am upgrading the XCR-L to maybe a TA11F/H ACOG, or a HAMR, or Mk4 MR/T, or Horus Talon, or CQ/T, having a hard time deciding. And the SL8 to a Schmidt & Bender.

Take a look at this if you have not seen it before, it might give some options:

I likes me EOtech.

65 MOA circle with the 1 MOA centre.... makes it fast to aquire and shoot longer distance with. Aimpoint are fantastic when you have the right tool for the job.... I just personally beleive it doesnt "multirole" as well.

Tavor

Waiting for my Tavor TAR-21 to arrive and trying to choose the right optic for it.
Any suggestions for occasional range shoots (100m) and mostly as PDW?

I was set on Aimpoint T1..

Cheers

I think that the Eotech's reticle is hard to beat for speed. The Aimpoint cannot be beat for battery life. They are both overpriced. I also think that the Eotech sits too high for anything but AR type rifles. A person may be better off with a 1-4x.

Look at the Leupold Mk6 1-6x...

I'm generally faster with the EO's - that said, the history I've had with EO drives me to Aimpoint.

Only problem I see with the MK 6 is that you're in VG-EXC used Short Dot territory, and for an extra couple of hundred bucks you have new S&B if you hit the right sale. Definitely a nice optic though.

... I want quality and it appears to be the only one in a compact package. ...

Regarding "compact"...
An Aimpoint Micro T1 + 3XMag total mounted length is ~7" (2.4" + 4.3" + space), so it isn't what I consider a real compact package compared to a tactical scope anyway.

Waiting for my Tavor TAR-21 ... I was set on Aimpoint T1..

Thread hijacker... ;)
Personally I don't care for Aimpoint for the points I mentioned previously.
IMHO for 100yd target shooting red-dot/holo are basically useless as the dot will usually obscure your entire paper target.
For PDW most tactical scopes with IR and set on 1x will do pretty much as well as an Aimpoint or EOTech.

Only problem I see with the MK 6 is that you're in VG-EXC used Short Dot territory ...

+1
That's why I didn't include the Mk6 in my list above on purpose.
Having seen through the glass of a S&B Short Dot, imho there is no reason to look at the Mk6.
Hence my upgrade plan for a S&B on my SL8.

I am seriously considering the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x for my V5 when it arrives.

That said, I would pick an Aimpoint over the EOTech for an RDS due to the superior battery life and durability.

I've had a few eotechs take a dump on me, so I avoid them like chicks with herpes.

Not a lot of larue mounts floating around up here, but if you can get one then get the 2moa aimpoint t1 with larue lt660. I think TSE had a deal recently on a 2moa t1 with ADM mount for less then 700. I've used the aimpoint magnifier before and I did like it, but ended up getting rid of it.

One of my 16" setups uses a trijicon tr24 in an lt104 mount. I like it for it's intended usage as the 1-4x is nice. That being said it's not in the same field as an S&B short dot, etc.
