IPDA vs IPSC

I've found ipsc to be rather elitist at times. Ipda not so much. Different atmosphere and mentality of the people participating. Cowboy shooting is also lots of fun.

Enjoy range time and have a good time, whatever you decide.

Whichever is accessible in your area. I shoot ipsc as there is ipsc here, I would shoot IDPA if there was IDPA matches here. There are differences in the sport, but not enough to say that I would ignore the one in my backyard and particpate in the one that I have to drive 4 hours to.

And if they are both in my backyard I would shoot both.

IPSC...mostly fat, middle age or older men and its ALL about how much money you dump into your gun. Tried it once... I couldn't stand all the BS I was hearing about all these guys amazing feats, how many flies they kill at 100yards with their STI .45s, ect. Very VERY elitist. My favorite part of the day is when my brass was jacked 20secs after I finished my run because apparently "I didn't look like I wanted it". Tell me again how rich you are when your panicking looking for that ONE missing 9mm brass casing that is not even yours.

My day was slightly turned around when watching these guys try to run, climb/get on the ground tho. :)

They remind me of why I stopped paintballing many years ago at certain fields frequented by "pro-ballers." The guys who wear head to toe sponsor gear and wave around their $3000 guns and talk/look down on everyone else. Ever goto a casual day at the range and see that guy in full gear with his race gun just hanging out? I have, and yah, they do like talking about themselves alot.

Not everyone is like that of course, every sport has its douches, but elitism is more evident with IPSC, much more so than IDPA.

Got my black badge, did a few IDPA club shoots but havent done an IPSC match yet. I dont like the rules in IDPA as much, such as order of engagement and reloads behind cover. But its fun to run a concealed rig or draw from under a jacket. If i had time and money id shoot both with the odd PPC shoot to keep up on the 25meter shots and weak hand shooting.

I have shot both IPSC and CDP (the IDPA'ish stuff in Canada). I liked both, but prefer IPSC as it is at a faster pace and I has a higher round count for matches, (I like to shoot a lot). I shoot a lot of production, and accuracy is VERY important. BTW, the same people in my area that shoot IPSC, shoot IDPA/CDP, and I don't find they are stuck up or elitist. Sucky you had a bad experience.
IN fact, the same stuck up elitist people invite me to stay at their homes if I have to travel a lot to a match in their area. When I took the Black badge back in May 2004, the instructor insisted I stay at his home! ONce you give it a chance, you make lots of friends in your province, and just about every province in Canada.

I shot IPSC when I was posted to NB and my experience was very different than yours. Everyone I shot matches with were friendly and down to earth. I did not get back into it when I was posted to AB.

I would be interested in trying IDPA.

This. I've only shot a couple practice matches because I just do it for fun and to get out and shoot, but everyone I've met has been very friendly and interested in helping a new shooter with tips and whatnot, and answered any questions I had. Most of the guys I've seen here shoot production or standard with Glocks and S&W M&P's. Haven't actually seen an open gun here, although heard one guy talking about his, and not in a manor to put down anyone else or to brag about it. I guess it all depends on your club. If anything, just pop by a range on an IPSC night and see how douchy people are, and if it sucks, check out IDPA.

They do CDP here to (same as IDPA I think) and I'd be interested in trying it out.

These guys were probably not experienced IPSC shooters because the good ones are so fast that usually, your brass is picked before it even touch the ground :D:D

He is in Ontario though. I can imagine close to Toronto. Everything in Toronto is like that. 2 weeks ago I had someone bragging to me about their car, and then 5 minutes later tell me they can't afford their lease payments and then 5 minutes after that talk about leasing a newer and better car..

I just wear earphones everywhere and pretend i'm listening to music now.

I'd like to try IDPA it looks like a bit of a different way to do the same thing. I've shot a fair bit of IPSC and out of the hundreds of people I met only a couple of em were pricks which is a lot better than the societal average. Don't worry about the gear race. If you decide you like the game and you wanna buy sport specific equipment go for it, just remember a grand master shooter will still beat your rookie ass wether they were shooting a hi point or a SVI. Money doesn't buy skill. I learn that every time I show up at a match and get beat by some guy thats old enough to be my father.

I can only speak for our own IDPA club, of course, but its pretty laid back, with a lot more emphasis on enjoying ourselves just shooting than trying to compete against the next guy. The competition couldn't get any friendlier, so to speak. We shoot a lot of 3 gun too, which everyone seems to enjoy a LOT.

Have shot a few IPSC matches but I'm very interested in IDPA as it seems more up my alley because it is supposed to simulate possible real life defence (I know we don't have this in Canada lol) scenarios and it seems less gamerish. I haven't seen much IDPA activity around here though, but to be fair, I haven't looked very hard. Maybe one day when I have some free time. Now back to surfing the Internet mindlessly for hours...

Games people play

If you are 50 years +, you'll prefer IDPA. :p

I'm 68 and shoot both IDPA and IPSC as well as Steel Challenge when I'm in the US for the winter.

Of the first two, I prefer IPSC for several reasons including the rules thing which is a common complaint about IDPA and spoofed delightfully in the cartoon clip linked in other posts. I find IDPA hard on my body as there is more bending and crouching which is hard on my creaky old knees.

I don't have much trouble moving around in IPSC partly because I go slowly and don't care too much about my times as long as I'm safe and having fun.

The Steel Challenge was a very pleasant surprise for me. It's a simple game but not easy to shoot well as it can be deceptively difficult. SC has improved some of my skills as it requires quick transitions and rhythm. The skills are transferable.

I shoot all of them as much as I can and have fun which is my second priority to safety. IPSC is the most expensive and SC is the easiest on the wallet as you can shoot rimfire at very low cost.

I prefer IPSC due to the fact that in most courses of fire you are going freestyle.
There is no one best way to go at it.
Really lets you be creative and push your limits.

I don't like rules or mandated order of engagement. Totally ruins it for me.
I shoot for the sport of it.

And I suppose one thing that really ruins IDPA for me is that I get no pleasure imagining I am engaging "threats". Like I said, I shoot for sport and to test the progression of my shooting ability.
Although I really dig the fishing vests.
