EO-Tech Vs. Aimpoint

Where could one go about finding these S&B short dots?? and what price range roughly? 1.1-4 is a nice amount of magnification. And im more focussed on keeping the rifle from being too top heavy rather then having it super compact!

Honestly, the battery life argument falls flat for me. Is it impressive that the Aimpoint battery lasts 50,000(?) hours? Absolutely! That's amazing. But realistically, lets say you shoot your gun for 2 hours every session (range, etc). And lets say you have 1 session a week. That's 8 actual hours of on-time a month, so let's round it up to 10. That means your Eotech, with a life of 600 hours, would last you 60 months, i.e. 5 years on one battery with regular use! Even if you put it to higher use, lets say 10 hours a week, that's still 1 year of use on one commonly available and cheap battery.

A good friend of mine got to the range and his optic was out of batteries. Your theory goes out the window right there.

Thats why I am a HUGE Trijicon fan. Give me an ACOG, a RMR dual illumination or an Accupoint anyday.

That's what happened to me the last three gun match I shot, even though I checked it the night before....good thing someone else had two spare AA's or I would have been using my BUIS (which were just roughly zeroed). Having said that, I very much like shooting with my EOTech which I find the dot much easier to find than on my TRS-25 on my 858. I will use my ACOG TA31F the next time I'm out at a three gun shoot.

Not bringing spare batteries to a match is not good practice. I have spares stored in my stock and grip at all times.

Two is one and one is none.

I have a Trijicon Accupoint in a ADM mount, I'm really happy with it, very good glass, adjustable brightness reticle, no batteries, 1-4x magnification. Its like a red not and magnifier in one.

I've had both EO and Aimpoints on rifles, I like not having to turn the sight on or off, and the fact that you could pretty much beat someone to death with the Aimpoint and you know it'll still be with you and properly zeroed. Dropping the sight or banging it against a bench or barricade doesn't require a careful inspection with the Aimpoint, the EO Tech not so much. I would love to be able to get an Aimpoint with the EO Tech reticle for shotgun use, but I don't trust the EO Tech to survive the knocks a short barrelled shotgun can throw out.

Apparently you think I'm an idiot.
Waste of my time to reply to this one...
There is a reason why most red-dots for CQB have large 2-4 MOA dots and why most scopes don't.
Yes, I'm having a bad day.

OP is looking for a compact optic, not a 12" long 56mm obj. target shooting scope.
My answers were in order to try to fit his request.

FYI the 1-4x Short Dot on a Mk18

The new Leupold Mk6 1-6x is smaller and lighter - and frankly a better scope (given the Short Dot is 15 years old - no surprise)

The US Army is going down the road of a Squad Common Optic - in a 1-6 to 1-8x scope. Close Combat Optics are great in close - however they fail at target discrimination and longer range shooting. The Combat Variables are slightly slower inside 50m - however not significantly - and they can be used way further than a CCO.

Frankly I've seen Kyle Lamb, Larry Vickers, Jim Smith and several former top tier guys shoot sub MOA groups with CCO's -- I shot a 1/3 MOA group in Texas with witnesses from a 11.5" SR-16E3 using a M4S Aimpoint -- consistent point of aim is the key.
This weekend I shot a 4 MOA T-1 on a 11.5" gun at 100m, 200m and 300m. 100m was 6" plates, the 200m was 8" and 300m was a 12" plate.
I call BS on the fact it cannot be used on tgt's that size at those ranges, ideally no - but it can deliver if the shooter does.

What is your criteria for the optic you want?
I hate Magnifiers on guns -- BigRed likes them, his criteria is likely different than me, and I'm not saying he's wrong.

Received my new EOtech battery compartment from Wolverine. Appears to be an improved design with one piece of rubber, time will tell if it fixes the battery compartment "issues". To anyone that has the old style rubber disks holding the battery contacts in this may be a worthwhile upgrade for only $10.

I can't find anything on their website...link etc to get new battery compartment? Thanks.

So far so good with the new style battery cases. The old style had a 40% failure rate where I work... a little over 100 Eotechs failed due to battery leakage, contacts corroding, and the odd electrical issue with the chip. Elite Arms has great customer service, as they took back ALL the sent new battery cases for ALL our Eotechs. Thing is, we stil have the Eotech... It was a mild winter this year, so there wasn't much condensation to built up in the units, but if we have a cold winter again, I suspect we will see the same issues pop up again, but this time it will be a little harder to detect due to the butterfly grommet design.

I have other reasons I don't favor the Eotech, but I don't think it's relavent here.

If you can afford it, get the Aimpoint for serious use on a one or two way range. If it's for recreational shooting, the Eocrap (oops, I tried not to do that) will do just fine.

Mikjk speaks the truth. Eotechs are for playing gun games, Aimpoints are for duty / service guns (I mean professional not recreational use).

And S&B is making a 1-8X short dot. And I understand it's cheaper than the newest Leupold "Tactical" line (sorry forget the nomenclature)

I am waiting for Shooting Centre to bring in their Leupold 1-6. I just missed the last one they had in.

There is only one powered optic I would trust with my life, Aimpoint Comp M4. Still on and still burning the factory battery since 2009, and still holding zero.
