.....Mini 14s became popular with all kinds of hunters, shooters as well as LEAs from the 1970s until the 1990s, by which time the poor reliability reputation of the AR15 had been put to rest, and accuracy issues with Mini 14 had begun to haunt it.

Today, all of this has been turned on its head and practically all firearms - including Mini 14 have become multi purpose through modification and accessorization. Their original purposes just don't define them anymore.

So is the Mini 14 a "black rifle"?

I would characterize it this way; the Mini 14 is not a "black rifle", but can be made into a black rifle through modification.

You must have read the "History of Ruger, and his firearms" as well.

From what I understood from the book, the mini-14 was only there to fill a gap with sportsman, that got wider and wider as time progressed.
It never quite got to be the rifle it was supposed to be, as they discovered after it became popular with police & LEO's.

Once the price and reliability of the AR-15 platform started to re-align with departmental budgets, the Ruger was relegated to the shelf, and ultimately removed from service.

It was the original one-hit-wonder, where I'm sure many shooters wondered where their first shot ended-up!

The mini 14 is a black rifle all right-in the same manner as the M1 Carbine, SKS, VZ 52, etc.

It is a carbine that is more on par with the old wood-stocked carbines than with modern rifles.

Personally, I believe that the only people who dislike the Mini 14 are the rifle elitists and mall ninjas just because it doesn't come standard with picatinny rails.

Come on Really, yer kidding right?

Lets be real for just a minute - I think the only people who dislike the mini platform (from experience) are people who believe that paying $600 plus for a rifle means you might actually get something that's accurate at 100yds or beyond, out of the box.

I've owned eight (8) of them - they all sucked from an accuracy perspective; all the way from a series 180 platform to a recently produced mini-30.

They are not a black rifle of any-kind out of the box....and never will be....... and are not in the same world as anything "black". It's akin to putting a composite stock on an M1 carbine, and calling it a target rifle. To even dabble into that mindset belongs to someone who doesn't (or more relevantly can't) delve into the world of the AR-15.

The bottom line is that the Mini-14 is an expensive non-restricted, utility rifle with mediocre accuracy....period; to think anything else is delusional.

Tell us how you really feel! :D

So, to sum things up, we're kinda' dealing with a situation where Ruger is putting lipstick on a pig and calling it Kate Moss? cou:

It's like that red headed step child we all know about, but nobody wants to talk about.

It's no black rifle but it's sort of allowed if it keeps out of the way and stays quiet.

Just think of the babies!!!!

Remember - Every time a gunnut mentions the "Mini 14" god inflicts another defenseless baby on liberal parents!

Should this be allowed in the black rifle section over the Mini-14.
Will something tragic like this happen to the Mini-14? Probably not!

its a california gun....they have a stupid assault weapons thing there where you cant have a pistol grip, so thats a non restricted pistol grip there...as for the pink hello kitty its great if it gets one more woman out shooting its worth it, i got my wife an sks d and i did the stock for her in candy pink

Really? The appeal of Hello Kitty, the colour pink and firearms for adult men of Asian extraction belongs in a whole other thread! f:P:2: :p

I have a wife and a daughter so I don't mind the pink and the hello kitty. It's part of winning the hearts and minds. The pistol grip BS is worth changing states over IMO. I mean, if you live in Cali, why not pop over to Arizona, an open carry state.

You are just a rifle elitist. I have had nothing but good luck with mine.

I sold my m14 a year ago and regretted it now I have my mini and it beats a AR any day unless u have one with a stupid long heavy barrel and guess what it can live in my truck
