Ok, I got drawn for my 2012 New Brunswick Moose tag:D. I really like my Kimber 84m 7mm-08 and like/use Federal Premium 140grn Ballistic Tips for deer hunting. I do not reload so my question is -- will I be under-gunned for moose with factory 7mm-08, 140's TSX or Nosler Partitions. The Noslers will give the best energy at 1750fp as apposed to the TSX at 1452fp -- not a great distance. Thought of buying a 08 or 06 but for a hunt that I may never get drawn for again? Most shots here are well inside 200 yds to very close.
Thanks in advance!

yes it will do the job. i would use nosler partitions or barnes tsx. what ever you feel comfy with. make sure you can make not a good shot a great shot on the moose. but if you need a reason to but a new gun i would say get a 308 win. probably the best all around caliber out there!

the 140 barnes or noslers bullets will work very well for you .

you could even go with a 160 grain bullet ...check the bailistics of the 160 and 140 and your more than likely only a few inches different in drop at 400 yards .

a 308 or 30-06 has a huge overlap between each other and the 7mm08 .

ifyou want a big gun ....go get a BIG GUN ....338 ....35...or many peoples favorite the 9.3x62

the 7mm08 that you have will work fine .....
a buddy of mine has a browning micro medalion in 284 win that i have been covetting for years ( the 7mm08 almost killed off this cartridge ,they are so similar ) .

over the years he has taken many many moose with it using the 140 grain nosler partition bullet .

i would look at the puny shell in my hand and the size of the moose.. i know i did when a huge bull walked in front of me while bear hunting with my 260rem.. twas a grand reality check , i now own bigger

All things considered a well placed hole will kill anything on this planet . Don't pay attention to the magnum weenies that need to brag up all the horse power they use to get game . You have more then enough gun to drop a moose

More moose have fallen the the 6.5x55 (ballistic twin to the .260) than perhaps any other single cartridge in existence.
doubt it

a 223 loaded with ttsx will kill a moose, but however it leaves little for error. same with a 7 -08. i would rather have too much gun and not need it, then have too little and require more

I don't think there is a shell big enough that held in my hand it will kill a moose. A 140 grain big game bullet shot into its heart/lung area will kill a moose.

You will have no problems taking a moose with the 7mm08 inside 200 yards.
Good shot placement and a good bullet such as the partition will put meat in the freezer.

x2! .... I'm leaving the 375 home this time and taking the 308 moose hunting instead. Using 180gr CoreLokts too.

.

All the moose that I have witnessed being taken here in NB were shot with a 308 or a 270 with no drama. A 7-08 should work just fine with good bullets. Moose, dispite their size, are not that tough.

You got a moose tag in NB, now that is LUCKY!!!

The rifle & cartridge combo you mention will work fine, most folks have magnum-itis nowadays where they think bambi won't die unless your using the latest inter-continental ballistic rocket (read 'shell')...

Good luck & POST PICS!!!

Cheers
Jay

Your 7mm-8 will do the job just fine, even with Rem CoreLoct...I have been toppling moose for some time now with a 25-06 using both Nosler Ps, and Rem CoreLocts..Both work just fine.

and if your off a mite..?

Then you are just that! No cal will make up for poor shooting..

More moose have fallen the the 6.5x55 than perhaps any other single cartridge in existence.

I would be willing to bet that boast would be held by Winchesters 30-30...
