Hello all,
I've been looking into purchasing a new shotgun for the fall, and I'm torn between the Winchester Super X3 and the Remington VersaMax... They're both fun and within my price range.. I've fired one of each once recently, but I'm still having a hard time choosing between the two.

Thoughts? Advice? Experiences?

Thanks all

They both shot well, but the sx3 seemed a little snappier on the draw which I liked..
I hear really good things about the reliability of the Remington, and nothing bad about the sx3...
I'm starting to lean toward the sx3, I think!

I don't think you will regret buying a x3. I have one and so far so good. But I still also have their x2's and x1' which will die with me,Keep them clean is the key.
I love remingtons also and have a few 1100 and 1187 but have not bought a versa max, did shoot one but have had some bad experiences with the quality of new rems so wait now a few years to see how they perform before putting out any cash.Enjoy your new gun

Vesramax is nice...but sx3 is better :)

know of remington ,fellow shoots sporting clays. shoots 5 flats of shells between clean up . no problems . i have one will shoot real light trap loads . will try 3in shells this fall.buy them both and tell us which one is better . lol !!!! know of a couple brownings and they seem to be very good too !!!!!

Remington has had its issues and they made a few dogs in the last years. I think they realized this when they made the Versa Max, Totally new design. on the gas system, and it works well. They gave the gun a upgraded warranty, to put people at ease.
I shot a 11-87 for few years, and as a waterfowl gun it worked fine, but with lighter loads it would miss feed.

My Versa Max is only little over a year old. It has seen three flats of watewrfowl loads, and 1000 rounds of light targets loads. No problems what so ever, it was shot last weekend by a friend of mine with 1 ouce loads ,very light and ate everthing.
Maybe Big green is getting there game together?
that beong said the SX is a great gun as well

The Versa-Max is a cheap copy of the Benelli system. Took apart an SBE2 and a Versa-Max, very similar internally.

The Versa's aren't complete garbage like most Remington products but it wouldnt surprise me if they start falling apart.

yes you are miss informed about the two guns , I have had both apart many times. The Sbe is not a gas driven gun, the Versa Max is
They use two smaller pistons that are located under the reciever. The gas metering system is a series of holes in the barrel just past the shell. The longer the shell more ports are covered.

I'll stand up for the versamax. A friend I shoot with owns one. 2 years, and cleaned once. Hundreds if not thousands of shells through it, only ever ftf hes ever mentioned was on a poor reload (hull was used way too many times and was bulging). Used for hunting and clays. Not babied at all. His only complaint is that the fore end cap rusted in one spot, but admits that's due to poor maintanience.

Think you mean the MR1, the only similarity is that the gas ports are up close to the chamber. The VM has 6 ports, I believe the MR1 has 1 port, very similar.
I'm sure if you looked at the evolution of guns you'd find that there lots of similarities that get shared by different brands.

I went with the Versamax. I have had no issues with cycling any loads. The only problem I had was the forearm was coming loose after a few rounds while shooting skeet. I called Remington in Quebec and they sent me the new design of forend and retainer which fixed this issue. Check out the huge thread on shotgun world buy stated by a guy named TuJays. Everything you need to know about the awsomeness of this gun is on there. You'll need a couple hours to read it all. I did manage to get two nice toms with this gun and am looking forward to duck season.

Maybe you should handle these guns before talking because you obviously cant tell a difference between inertia and gas driven LOL

The Versa Max gas system is the same as Benelli M4.

I recently purchased a SX3 and it has worked really well for me. I had it out crow hunting shooting cheap #4 lead 1 1/8 oz loads and it cycled everything i put through it. They were and still are on sale for $1100 in duck blind camo.

I figured if it cycles the cheap stuff with no issue then it should cycle the better quality ammo with ease. so far it has been on two crow hunts and had approx 150-200 shells through it.

I have never handled the versa max so I can not comment on it....but so far so good for my SX3
