Well my MIL-SPEC M14 Flash Hider from keepshooting.com came in today..Nice looking piece nice casting well cleaned up and finished …hold it lightly and tap it …rings like a bell ….

So of to the basement to remove the Norinco one …the set screw is loose and comes out no problem. The castle nut was a different story but I did get it loose …and the stock flash hider came off first tap ..Hold this one and tap it …doesn’t even ting …what they use to cast these things pot metal …lol

Figured while I was in there I might as well sand the gas ring down so I could lock it up tight … easy job ..took 15 min. to get the fit just right

Put it back together …and took it out shooting …..I GOT PING

didnt have time to see if tightning up the gas ring helped with grouping but did i mention I GOT PING :D

Did i not mention i found a Bayonet at a garage sale a few weeks back for 20bucks

In your pics you provided it looks to me that you need to rotate the castle nut some more to get the set screw to sit inside the slots of the castle nut ...And did you try flipping the gas locking ring over as this will sometimes get it to lock up correctly.
PS...I like your paint job :)

Ive decided Im tone deaf...and there ends the pursuit of the ping. Ive done it all except change the FS, and mine pings off the rifle but not on it. Couldnt even find the ping after doing a clinic with the maestro. So its there.. I just cant hear it ...feel so much happier now :))
Nice looking gun Sir and excellent deal on the bayonet :)

Hadn’t noticed till you pointed out the set screw ...its loose in the threads..Must have backed off a bit shooting it ....put a little lock-tite on it and put it back in...

And yes I tried flipping the gas ring ...it was further away from tightening than the original almost 3/4 of a turn out from locking up..So a little light sanding ..10 tries so I did not over do things and got it to go the last 1/4 turn needed to lock up tight ....I was shooting it loose you couldnt get the last full turn out of it ..

and Thanks on the paint ...its holding up well for a textured paint from a can

bayonet ...lol i asked how much ...kid yelled at his mother ...i held up a 20 she said yah and walked away

I think I need to sand my locking ring as well cause it goes passed 6 o'clock on both sides, I even unitized the gas system and I still need a shim to get it hand tight to 5 o'clock and tap tap tap to 6 :( . And I haven't any ping, just that metal to metal contact sound :(

Question is ..can you get ping out of a Norinco flash suppressor even if you do all the right work …
My Norc is dead when you tap on it …this new one rings like a tuning fork even on the rifle .tap on it rings

. . . what is this "ping" you speak of ?

Head over to YouTube. Search for Funker Tactical. Look through their posts/ videos and find the one with me in front....

M14 University they called it... that really was funny.

Search for my Glock bloopers... oh wait , I found it:

Now watch this one at about minute 4 or so... listen for the PING of my rifle... even minute 1:20 when I shoot the vase (yard sale purchase)or 2:37 when I shoot the octopus hostage taker...

And don't give me any guff about the hammer hitting the primer... I was sun fzcked at that point in the afternoon during the filming.

Have fun with the PING!! It's one of the indicators that your gas gun is tight and vibrating as ONE.

Cheers,
Barney

I liked that m14 exposed video …I haven’t seen that one before ….now I have 4 times …lol......got to love the ping

I was sure my d**k would have fallen off if i couldnt get mine to ping

Hungry ....Can you get a ping from a Norc suppressor

Thanks to Hungry I have HUGE PING! Yes, you can get ping from a Norc flash hider, but the aftermarket ones are way better.

Mmmmm love that ping :)

And that's what you git for going to an M14 clinic (in Calgary) . Thanks for speaking to the Norc flash suppressor being able to ping... yes they can but ya gotta bust off the Norc unit in the first place.

At the Calgary clinics we used a length of 2 x 2 spruce and later graduated to a piece of birch (split, too) firewood (Thanks, Fort Mac FG members) to rest that gas cylinder on and then whack the flash suppressor with a cold chisel and dead blow hammer. :D That sure was funny. Then once you get it off, we can see where that gas lock bottoms out or passes through the bottom dead center position  and needs the 180 degree fix or the gas lock swapping party or the shims (last and final option).

Several of you at the Calgary, 100 Mile House, Fort McMurray, and Dundurn, SK clinics (I did 7 of them for you westerners) learned about the fine practice of fitting the gas cylinder lock to obtain a tight unitizing fit that will allow the barrel to vibrate like and tuning fork and the flash suppressor to PING very acutely. :D The benefit you Interior BC clinic dudes showed me was how 10 people with sloppy gas locks were able to swap (kinda like speed dating at a reality show) gas locks; obtain a tight fit and by process of elimination, all 10 people ended up with proper fitting gas cylinder locks. NOT a single shim was used at the BC Interior clinic. At Dundurn, SK clinic about 6 people had loose gas cylinder locks and ONLY one dude had to shim (ONE shim needed). Life is good! :D

Happy PING'ing!

Cheers,
Barney

Love the m14 exposed vid too...thanks to Hungry and Funker Tactical for that!!

Hungry - any Lower mainland BC clinics in the works?

Hey Barney, missed all the Calgary shows due to work. Your videos are great. Ever consider a "how to" DVD complete with all the M14 clinic knowledge? I'm sure there would be quite a market. I'd buy one for sure. The outtakes alone would be worth it haha.

And counselling for those of us without 'ping'

Oh God why have you forsaken me thus......feels like #### loss...sob, sob
Back to the kitchen table and tear it apart again.....I WILL HAVE AUDIBLE PING.
Even if I have to shout 'PING' everytime I squeeze the trigger.

Even if I have to shout 'PING' everytime I squeeze the trigger.

Haha that is a hilarious visual...:ar15:PINGPINGPING

So from what I understand, the Norc F/H is made of lower quality metal restricting harmonic vibration gained from a beefier op rod spring guide and USGI spring? Would I be correct in assuming that bedding the barrel would increase the ping as well?
