Empty hole/Important hole?

I want to mount a sling swivel stud and/or a picattiny rail on the front of my m305, but I have gotten different answers about the empty hole in front of the sling mount.
Some say it's just an empty hole, but I heard it could be a gas vent.

Can I cover it with a rail or put a sling swivel stud in it?
I want to mount a fixed sling point, and a bi-pod.
 
Thank-you sir. That was what I was afraid of.
I'll use the sling mount holes to mount a picattiny rail towards the receiver to keep the hole free.
 
I STILL have yet to understand how it vents any gas? The gas is dumped out of the hole in the bottom of the gas cylinder, below the valve. No gas comes blasting out of that hole... The stock I got from The old Doc' has a sling stud where that hole usualy is.
 
It does NOT vent any gas. Ever. Its only purpose is to drain water. Don't be afraid to plug it, unless your operating in monsoon conditions.

As you can see all the gas exits through the bottom of the gas system, where the gas release hole is. Not in the stock.

and i suppose water should it get in there

the reason it is there for the gas, is that those gasses , if trapped and allowed to settle inside the stock, collect on the surfaces of the rifle and cause pitting/rust ect. primarily right above the piston on the barrel and the oprod tube.

i've got a video showing it very clearly and i'll see if i can post a link.
 
actually nevermind the video i was going to post, it has our advertising on it so i'll get banned LOL

but seriously, get a file, set the sling plate back the distance of 1 hole. reattach your sling plate with 1/4 x 28 button heads and nuts and attach your stud to what was the front sling plate hole.
It is the "new" way to go for those that want a bipod on a stud, not block the hole, and keep the standard sling plate.
 
No mate, dont pretend to be nothin I wasnt :) I was a Recce Mech and guns were a friggin nuisance :)

Just FYI I would listen to 45acpking.

He is the artist formerly know as m14doctor. I would suspect he has more time on this platform gunsmithing than all of the other posters combined have shooting them.

I am curious.

I want to get rid of the sling attachment that's there now. I have a 1/2 point sling and it's a pain to attach with one hand because the attachment flops around. I want to put a solid sling mount on, so I can quickly attach my 2-point.

If I can use the existing empty hole for a sling stud, I'll attach my bi-pod there, and use the existing sling plate holes to mount a moe front sling attachment. I have one here and it looks like it will fit nicely, but will take up all of the space that the current plate takes.

A picattiny rail will work, but I want to setup the front of the gun as cheaply as possible because I want to spend some money on a good scope/mount. I'll get a rail if I must, but it doesn't look like I need to.
The rail is a couple boxes of ammo at least! :)
 
The US military put it on every single M-14 stock it own's for a reason.
I don't know why it's there but it is there for some reason.
 
I e-mailed Springfield Armoury as I have actually been curious myself as to the purpose of the hole.

LOL , gas, water...... doesn't really matter, it serves a purpose hehehe

I am modding my son's polytech stock tonight for the set back sling plate, bipod stud, with vent hole exposed set up. I'll take some step by step photos that can be added to the stickies if Hungry agrees. ;)
