8 ball's C8 build progress thread

Good price on that Green Mountain barrel. I was hoping to find something with a front sight post included but so far that's the only other 1/7 14.5" chrome bore I've seen available.

Having a FSB properly installed should cost you between $60-100. You have to get the barrel reprofiled by a gunsmith anyway so it may work out cheaper than that when you combine the work.
 
Ok, I'm seriously considering picking up one of those Green Mountain barrels from Wolverine Supplies. My question is how difficult is it to drill the front sight assembly and barrel for the pins that hold the front sight assembly on? Are the holes supposed to be tapered or is the hole one diameter and the pins have a little taper to them? Anyone done this themselves?
 
Unless you have taper drills, or a taper reamer, or for that matter the necessary jigs to align the FSB with the gas hole and receiver extension fixing pin, this is a gunsmith job - not a DIY job.
 
The issue is that the "tail" on the disconnector, in semi-auto, hits a ledge on the selector in full-auto mode which causes it to NOT catch the hammer if you keep the trigger pulled and the hammer thusly is NOT caught by the sear and follows the bolt carrier home. In some cases, this will simulate full-auto. NOT GOOD (in a legal sense).

If you remove the disconnector tail or use a semi-auto selector, you're good to go.

I tried this today at the shop. The disconnector does not catch the hammer and the hammer will indeed ride the bolt like you said. Yeehaw!
 
I would like to extend a big "thank you" to -[Crosshair]- for helping me out with an aluminum stock and a correct 2 position buffer tube. And maybe (fingers crossed) a buffer tube nut and rear sight assembly. Here is a couple shots of the stock assembly.

A few people commented that they would use a 4 or 6 position buffer tube instead of the "proper" 2 position and I can understand their position on this, however I always shoot with my stock fully extended and transport with the stock fully collapsed. For me the 4 or 6 position has no real benefit and the 2 position is proper to boot, so I decided to stick with it.

I also got in the Socom barrel that I had ordered (also from another CGNer) and while this barrel will NOT be used on the C8, I did mock it up just to get a feel for it. If my gas tube comes in soon I may temporarily assemble it with this barrel, just to try the barrel out.

Anyone know where I can pick up a peel washer and a couple Thermold mags? These are a couple small items that I will need and I don't know where to find them.

So my C8 build is actually morphing into 2 builds, one being the C8 that is the primary focus of this thread and the other being a C8A2 or C8FTHB. How the heck does stuff like this happen anyway?!:confused:;):D This bring us to a few more questions. Are the lowers stamped C8A2 or C8FTHB? As I was surfing a few websites for Colt info I came across one where a guy says that ALL Colt carbine handguards are 6 hole and not 7. Is this true? Are the new Colt handguards still 6 hole? If anyone can shed any light on the subject it would be greatly appreciated! I am also assuming that all the newer Colts have a fiberlite stock, not aluminum like the older ones?
 
Some are stamped C8FTHB and some are stamped C8A3. It's important to note that only the C8 is centered. The A3 or FTHB almost look like they are added after the fact, and they may be. Why most of these clones center the whole thing is beyond me.

FTHB all have black furniture, including fiberlite stock. They did not have the ambi parts or triad originally, but most have been upgraded.

A3 all have green furniture, ambi parts and a modified triad, what the point of the mod is isn't clear to me. Handguards are 6 hole and are painted green.

The stocks on both these rifles are unique to Diemaco, while they look like a Colt fiberlite they have this weird texture on them, probably to reduce shine/glare. Some Colt fiberlites will be encountered, including green ones on C7A2s and C8A3s.
 
So tell me if I have my info right. From what I have been able to find, the C8FTHB and the C8A2 are the same gun, the C8A2 designation being the Canadian Military designation and the C8FTHB designation being the Diemaco model number. The C8A3 is the C8A2 (or the C8FTHB) upgraded to have the ambi controls, TRIAD, and the green furniture. Is this correct?
 
The Canadian Forces does NOT use the C8A2. We never did. We used the C8FTHB and now use the C8A3. The C8A2 is not the C8FTHB. They are all different rifles.

The C8A2 is a 14.5" barreled C8 with a flat-top upper receiver. The barrel has M203 cuts like the government profile barrels on M4s and M4A1s.

The C8FTHBs and C8A3s have 16" barrels with the sleeve over them for the CF's M203A1 with its mount.

The C8A2 is a rifle offered by Colt Canada to police departments and other armies, the CF never got any. No C8 was ever stamped A2 for us.

We've got receivers stamped with only C8, receivers stamped with C8FTHB, receivers stamped with C8FTHBA3 (about 400 of them with A3 engraved on them later on, they were basically the first C8A3s) and all newer ones are stamped C8A3.

Even though I keep correcting everyone I know I'll still hear it in all the units I'll go to in the future. At least it's not as bad as the "we're replacing all Browning Hi-Powers with .45 ACP 1911 clones" rumour I started 4 years ago and that I still hear today. :p
 
OK, I stand corrected! Is the C8A2 heavy under the hand guards, similar to my Socom barrel or not? If not I may just build a Colt upper and not try to "match" anything with that one.

I'm sure that Colt Canada would make the barrel in any config the end user want. The majority would probably prefer government profile under the handguards. If you look at pics of the C8A2 on the Colt Canada website there appears to be something strange going on with the turned down portion where you'd mount an M203, it appears to be in the wrong spot.

I'd use your Colt barrel to make a M4A1 Socom clone.

Never seen a C8FTHB marked with an A3 as well, now I'll have to keep my eyes out for one.
 
FWIW, on Roto 0, some C8's showed up in the system with flat-top receivers (otherwise identical to the C8) and the troops took to calling them the C8A1 - though I never saw a rifle thusly marked...? The Det in Victoria still has a bunch of these at the armory - saw some there this spring.
