I've gotten the firearms bug and am planning future purchases. Next up is a pistol and then a rifle. I've already got a shotgun.
My heart was set on the XCR, but for the same price I could buy a Daniel Defense AND a CZ858. Buying both would quench my thirst for a non-restricted rifle to take in the bush, having a 7.62 caliber, and my love for a sweet AR platform to dress up nice for the range. As a bonus i would have two tested battle rifles to use during the Zombie Apocolypse. From researching the XCR forum, even the XCR guys for the most part dont trust the reliabilty of the XCR to have as a SHTF rifle.

Is my logic sound and is the right way to go ?
I ask cause I'm new to the hobby but have grown up shooting rifles and spent 3 years in the reserves.

if your heart is set on an XCR than just go ahead and buy it, there are just as many XCR owners that are happy with it than those are not, personally both my XCR's have been running just fine, it wasn't until I started reading the forums did I realize my XCR supposed to have a lot of problems. either learn how to hand tighten screws or just loctite everything.

On the other hand DD and VZ are good choices too, but that also means two rifles to dress up and two caliber of ammo to keep in stock.
 
Get a Tavor. Way lighter and far more compact than an XCR. You can't do much better for reliability, either. As for a Swiss Arms, by the time you 'accessorize' it by just adding rails to mount anything you could've bought two Tavors (or XCRs). 5-round mags also suck. And if you thought the XCR was heavy and unwieldy... Tavors are cooler, anyway. ;)
 
I can tell you has a new XCR-M owner, I couldn't be happier, and I think the reliability issues you speak of were related to older XCR-L models, specifically in the 7.62x39 calibre where there were some magazine feeding issues when used in conjunction with cheaper quality ammo.
Trust me, I did a TON of research before I made this purchase. It was a considerable investment for me after I added a good optic and some other peripherals. I honestly feel the XCR-M will be an extremely reliable and dependable rifle, and yes I also partly purchased it as a SHTF firearm just like you want. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all.
 
If you don't mind having 2 different guns go for the dd and cz, but be warned by the time you dress them up and stockpile ammo for both you'll have spent a decent amount more than if you had just got the XCR, I have an XCR and I love it, I have had no issues and I dare say it's just as if not more reliable than my issued c7, especially if it's a little dirty

I think, if you really want an XCR, just go for it. You won't be happy until you do, and anything you get, no matter how good it is, just won't be the same. So get the XCR...maybe even an XCR-M, so you get the 308 caliber... then a DD AR...
 
I didnt mean for this to be a 'bash the XCR' thread and i love the rifle, but for me to add a caliber conversion kit, i need to add another $7-800 to the already $2400 price tag. I really liked the fact that the XCR is unrestricted, but by buying a CZ858 that niche is filled and can use that for shooting cheap ammo. The DD can be used when i want to drive tacks down range and compete with friends. And both those rifles cost me less than the XCR.
I also liked the fact my brother pointed out and that is when the Zombie hordes come for us, you can always arm a few others.

Well... I'll throw another choice into the mix: ACR with (Herron) non-restricted barrel. So this is what you have in the non-restricted/half-decent black rifle category (also cheapest to most expensive): XCR-L, Tavor, ACR and Swiss Arms.

The XCR-L is popular for the caliber conversions (mainly for those that want to hunt with it); you can also accessorize it somewhat (grip, stock). The Tavor is a great all-around plinker/varmint duty. The ACR is essentially a next-gen AR, and you really don't need to upgrade anything on it. As for the Swiss Arms, it's probably the tack driver of the group - but it's also going to run you close to $4k by the time you add mounting rails (and limited to 5-rounds).
 
When I crunched the numbers I ended up going with the Benelli MR1 (paid $1729). Solid, reliable non-restricted rifle that has functioned flawlessly with ~800 rounds fired to date. It's a little hard to dress-up with the rear sight (removed mine) but I love the gun.
 
just go for a new XCR.. thats what I did.. If there ever is a problem wolverine will look after you. Just put 500rnds through mine onthe weekend with out a single issue. Been runing in on gas setting 1 after the first 200 went down range. fit and finish is good on this one. I wanted one for a long time and nothing else I bought would fill the void. As for arming others when the zombie's come...well, if they are un armed they are food lol Save your guns and ammo, you will need it lol
 
Check them out at a gun store. On paper the XCR is great. I wanted one until I checked out one at a gun store. It wasn't for me.

Personally I like the AR and CZ858 idea. Both are good fun firearms. The Tavor is also cool. But Id get the AR and CZ first. The CZ is cheap for plinking and pretty handy. Everyone should own an AR or eight.

The XCR may work for you. I highly recommend checking them out at the store first. This way you can compare them all at least for ergos, build and which ones appeal to you.

Does this Tavor come in 308?
I wish 1 day I can afford to have this problem.
