The gun - $300

Ruger 10/22 w/ Jacaranda laminate stock.

I chose this model, because I am planning on keeping the stock, and just modifying it to work with the bull barrel, and adding a cheek riser to deal with the scope height.

The Cheek Riser - $30

I went with just the plain black version, which is a simple velcro strap design that comes with a few pieces of foam to adjust height.

The Scope - $170

This is not going to be a long range type build, and more of a plinker/hunting gun. I already have a Savage MKII that shoots amazing so I am not going to try and compete with that. Compact, and light are going to be the way to go here.

Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x32.

The Barrel + Thread Protector - $200

12 inch Dlask with thread protector. Not much to say here, other than the chamber is just a sporter chamber, and I am not sure what to think about that. I don't want any issues with cheap bulk ammo so I am a little concerned about going with the match chamber. Dlask does have a model with an "Extreme" chamber, but I have heard of picky ammo issues, and want a reliable gun more than a tack driver.

The other option is a Mcgowan with a Bentz chamber from Mystic Precision but I don't want to wait for it to be ordered.

Anyway here is the Dlask;

And of course the important parts:

The Target Hammer - $50

This improves the trigger pull quite a bit over factory, and without spending the money on a whole trigger group. Just fine for my intended purpose.

The Extractor - $20

This is a titanium extractor from Power Customs. I would have gone VQ, but can't seem to find one so figured I would give this a shot.

Mag - $30

Of course I ordered a Butler Creek Steel lips for fun.

Butler_Creek_Ruger_10-22_smoke.jpg

So that is $800 which after tax and shipping works out to around $1000, into a 10/22!!!

I was a little put off at first by the costs, but since I like tinkering, and have seen so many builds like this I am pretty excited about it.

I will update the thread with the build, and range report as we go. ;)

Wait till you add an aftermarket charging handle and mag release, upgrade the bolt, add a target trigger and go with a thumbhole stock! :D (you forgot the rings $)

Enjoy buddy....

Didn't forget the rings, just not sure what to get yet. ;)

Gotta see it all together and see how she fits.

As far as the extra's you mention, I don't think I will be bothering.

$1000 is my limit! :)

OMG, poor baby, I already have tears in my arse, listen to him...
..... he is a little concerned, ...... picky ammo issues, nyah, nyah.

With the X-treme chamber, do exactly what it has been said
a million times on this site and you will be fine.

Namely:
Barrel > Clean. I mean CLEAN.
Be very careful not to scratch or damage the rifling, crown or chamber
when cleaning.
Shoot it dry. NEVER shoot a gun (any gun) with oil or other sh!t in the bore.
Lube the barrel only for storage or as part of the cleaning process.
Remove any oil/lube/sh!t from the barrel before shooting.

Receiver, bolt and spring rod assembly > Clean and well lubed.
Do not shoot them dry.
Same with the factory magazine. Clean it.

Get a good trigger group or a trigger job, whatever you can afford.
A good trigger group goes from $100 to over $600,
a trigger job from $50 to $300.

That scope doesn't have enough magnification.
A Tasco 6x to 24x at Reliable is about $125 or so.
I have at least 2 and a lot of people I know have one.
It comes with 2 shooting bags as a gift in the same package,
you have to fill them up. For the bags, do NOT use sand,
use plastic pellets from plastic injection places.
That Tasco scope works on centerfire rifles as well.

Now, maybe you have already seen the light (before reading this post),
and changed your order
for an X-treme barrel - I kinda feel that in my urine ;)

If so, then try this:
Ammo > if you can afford it,
start with SK (some say it is the old Lapua Super Club) from Reliable.
Also try Am. Eagle 40 gr solid (38 gr hollow point is less performant),
Federal Champion (blue box) bulk,
some Winchester bulk as well.
Generally, any Fed or Winchester bulk, but start with the above.
When changing ammo, allow few shots (like 20 or so) for the
the new ammo to season your barrel before judging accuracy results.
In an X-treme chamber, do not use CCI (mini mag, blazer, velocitor, stinger),
no CCI ammo at all.

When loading the first round from the mag,
do not "drive" the charging handle forward with your hand,
but rather let it go slam forward by itself.

When shooting, do not let the gun to free recoil,
but hold it solid in your shoulder.

You will be fine.

PS I forgot to tell you, stainless is for sissies
(that is where the SS symbol is coming from),
especially as an unnecessary extra charge
when you are on a budget ;)

As Lector said it's not the cheap ammo your going to have a problem with in a X-treme barrel

It's CCI ammo. So i just keep my Stingers for my shorty bolt gun.

FU Lector! :p

They only have the "Extreme" 12.5 inch in stainless!

You just cost me another $20! ;)

Changed my order just in time..............

Too bad about the CCI though. Blazers and Standard Velocity are my go to .22 ammo. Works the best in my Savage MKII.

I am really not gonna shoot this past 50m much so the scope is fine, and I have the target hammer coming, and will follow the procedures in the 10/22 tips and tricks to polish everything up in the trigger group.

Thanks

Well the postman brought me a couple things today! ;)

Got the gun, BC mag, and scope.

- Picked up some Weaver Grand Slam rings
- Mounted scope
- Chopped the stock.
- Installed sling swivel stud
- Picked up and installed a bipod
- Set up the cheek riser

Still waiting on:
- Extractor
- Target Hammer
- Barrel & Thread Protector
- Bolt Buffer

Obviously gonna have to relieve the barrel channel and refinish the stock once I get the barrel.

Also planning on doing the auto bolt release mod, and polishing all the trigger components. ;)

Looks a little silly with the long skinny barrel, but with the 12.5 inch I think she will look just right. :D

Alright, no parts in the mail today.

Anyways, I'm off so had to do something, and decided I would take this thing down and clean her up, so might as well get out the polishing gear.

So I polished the contact surfaces in the trigger group, drilled a cleaning hole in the back of the receiver, and dremelled out the bolt release to adapt it to function as an auto bolt release.

Took about an hour, and was all really easy to do following the thousand tutorials available online.

The trigger is pretty simple to swap out when I get the new one, and the new extractor even easier, so no worries there.

All this money, and work, and I haven't even shot the thing yet.

Might have to remedy that tonight. ;)

So a few things have changed, and some money wasted. :Bang head:

I have decided to go with a Hogue Overmold stock, as the laminate was chipping where I cut it, as well as behind the receiver, and I have no patience for that crap. Wasted $50 buying this model over the synthetic. Good news is I can use the cheak riser for my Mauser sporter.

Anyways got the stock yesterday. ;)

Also decided after my last range trip, that the scope was just not enough magnification, and it wasn't as compact as I was hoping anyways.

I was impressed with the scope though, so decided to try the new Nikon P22 tactical.

NikonP22_AR-Riflescope-4.jpg

The barrel should be arriving today, and I will pick up the scope today or tomorrow, so the end is almost here.

I will of course update when she is finished. ;)

Well, I don't know what happened, but my build has changed faces completely. LOL

What started as a compact, and light carry around gun, has now become a full out tacticool build.

When I learned about this Nikon P22 scope, I had to have it, and then the laminate stock just didn't make sense anymore, especially with the chipping.

So here she is, in all her glory!

I think Lector is on the correct path with regards to ammo recommendations.
SK ammunition is piling up at my place. SK Standard I've always had a good supply of and very recently Rifle Match too.
For me, the SK Standard shoots very well @50 yards in the 10/22 as well as the Hammerli pistol.
I'm going to get a decent order in for Special Pistol Match in the near future.
(specifically for the Ruger Mk II heavy barrel)
And my preliminary experiments with Rifle Match in the peep sighted Martini Model 13 looks very promising indeed.
In tighter match type chambers, this ammunition does not disappoint IMO.
This was/is my experience, others may have varying results.

Cheers!
