I've been reading a lot of reviews online and people seem to be pretty happy with the Steyr M9A1. I'm looking to get my first pistol and want something that is different then what everyone else at the range is using.

Anyone on CGN that has one that can offer some feed back? Is the Steyr a good gun to start with? If you have more than 1 9mm - where does the Steyr rate for you?

I find the Steyr a mediocre combat pistol "not bad but not great" I would give it a 7/10 rating

It lacks for these reasons

-bad grip texture
-not able to adjust grip size
-few sight options
-few options
-parts are hard to find
-Mags are hard to find
-non ambi design "only bad for leftys"

If you want to stand out and like the polymer look I would suggest the Walther PPQ "if you have large hands the PPQ sucks though"
 
Ive got 2 9mm my first was a ruger p89 which i love and is my favorite. Ive also got a steyr m9a1 which i like very much, there glockish like but look a lot nicer and are more comfortable in your hand.

Most of them shoot awesome, a few have issues but those issues are easilly fixable as with any other firearm. Most of the issues are with extraction but a simple spring mod can fix that.

My steyr eats anything i feed it.

Until youve put at least 500 rds down range i wouldnt try fixing anything unless its an obvious problem.

I also purchased the steyr because it wasnt a common firearm in canada or doesnt appear to be anyway.

1 downside to the steyr is lack of support in canada though if you do run into serious issues. I did alot of forum reading before making my purchase and i looked for a build date specific model with no lci to avoid 1 issue, and have since received some free spare parts in the mail from Steyr Austria.

I dont regret my steyr purchase at all.

I think a new batch of magazines have been distributed also because ive seen a few dealers relisting them now. If you want to enhance the feel of the gun try a hogue handall slip on grip too, it actually improved my accuracy.

For me personally I would rate my Steyr an 8/10 due to the lack of support and accesories
 
great gun, some parts you can get from US. I've shot from mine more than 3000 rounds, no issues. For myself, do not care if it is ambi or not. Sights can be changed, problem is to get those in here. I have Trijicon ones. If you surf around you will find magz, as for holster, I got one from bladetech.
 
Thanks folks! Do you know any dealers in Canada where I might be able to find one? The only place I could find was Frontierfirearms.ca - but they are out of stock

I love my Steyr. I find the grip terrific, and while it doesn't offer an adjustable grip - not all handguns do, either (although this is becoming more prevalent). I actually really like the sights, but you can easily replace with a Tritium variant if so desired. As for options, I've modified the recoil guide rod, trigger, spring and base plate (not sure what other options are needed?) I agree that spare parts and magazines will be hard to source; that's probably the only aspect I'm not thrilled about.

I think Canada Ammo (click sponser link) has some in stock.

The M9A1 was my first gun, and I bought it strictly on looks and comfort. Somewhat Glockish, but feels much more ergo in my hands. Sights are unique, I like, but not good at all for accuracy. I have Trijicon night sights that I have yet to mount. Trigger feel is horrible. Had extraction and ejection issues at first, but the fix was simple.

Since then I have bought a CZ Shadow and an STI Ranger 2 - 9mm. The CZ is an awesome gun compared to my Steyr. I havent shot my STI yet. I should sell my Steyr but I still really like it. Compared to my friends G17, it's very similar but i feel the Steyr is a better made gun and about 1000 rounds of ammo cheaper.

IMO if you were only planning to buy one gun, get a CZ75....
 
Anyone needing parts for their M9 or M9A1 (or the 40s or rifles) contact me, we keep about everything in stock for the gun as we are the Steyr Mil/LE warranty centre. I guess the fact that we aren't as well known is due to their reliability! (Tongue in cheek there.)

I have a bunch of 9s personally and the Steyr is one of the go to guns for me. As a buddy says its a hammer - not pretty but it does what its supposed to every time. The sights do take some getting used to but the old HiPower also had a triangular front sight so it isn't THAT radical. Worst case night sights for them are regular square profile though we don't normally stock those, we can get them.

I've shot mine in IPDA and it works great. The new leather holsters from Steyr are outstanding. I do like the original grip better than the A1 but that's personal preference. The guns are available and if you have problems finding them email me at phil@odell.ca and I will help you out.

To each their own, but my steyrs finish is excellent and the fit couldn't be any tighter.

Im not knocking glocks, tried a few in hand a couple times but the frames appearance don't appeal to me and the gun just doesnt feel right in hand.

Glad to see O'dells is dealing with the steyr again as Ive been less than impressed with North Sylva when it comes to steyr handguns.

Out of curiosity how much can you get the leather holsters for?

He also was involved in the design of the Caracal a United Arab firearm which is similar to the Glock and Steyr and currently imported through Steyr USA.
 
I have 3 friends that have all told me to avoid the Glock - I haven't fired one myself - the guy that has one that my friends shoot with I don't know well so I haven't had a chance to try the Glock.

The Steyr is one ###y pistol - I like the look of it the best of anything else that I've seen. I really appreciate everyone's response - I think I'm going to give the Steyr a go - the RCMP just have to hurry up and get my PAL mailed out!!
