Is CCW permitted in Canada?

I have Googled this already and the consensus is "No". As I expected. Is this true? And no I have not yet applied for my PAL yet. Just looking to have some questions answered before I do.

I ask this because we constantly (well once in a long while in Toronto) about how a gun owner was targeted for a break-in. Had his gun collection stolen. Never caught the bad guys. His guns & ammo are now on the streets.

I ask myself...how did the perps know to rob this person? Did they simply follow him home from the gun range? From the gun shop?

Are gun owners who frequent gun ranges sitting ducks? Seems to me it would be safer if CC was allowed to PAL holders. But only to carry when transporting their guns from the home to the range and back. I don't believe in the American thinking where we should or need to carry every day. Their laws and thinking is a bit extreme IMHO.
 
Answer is no like you said.

Only way you can CCW is if your life is in danger and the police can not protect you. You need to apply for the CCW tho....VERY few people have the permit.
Another reason to carry is if your job require you to carry it...like scientist in a forest?

And only police officers can CCW.
 
It is permitted under the Firearms Act, but the number of people carrying will be close to zilch. Plenty of threads on this - basically, the CFO has to approve the application, and even if the Mob is after you, you're SOL. It's a very convenient, and almost 100% accurate statement to say, practically speaking, "No", it's not permitted.

They probably look for the driveways where the pickups have a large number of Glock, Browning, and S&W bumper stickers on them.
 
Just heard about our version of the CCW (the ATC). There's a "Canada Carry" site being built. The owner David told me about the ATC and how it's nearly impossible for any one to get.

Being that all of you are probably already gun owners with your collections and PAL. How do you handle your gun hobby? I mean, do you just go to your local range, gun shops and shows under the assumption you're not going to be followed. Or does the possibility always sit in the back of your mind making you aware of your surroundings when you leave the range, gun shops and the like?
 
I've heard lots of stories about major gun thefts, especially restricted and prohibs, but never what exactly lead to it. But as mentioned above, don't put glock stickers on your car. Don't put "Insured by Smith and Wesson" on your front door. Big one nowadays is go easy on the facebook pictures. If your profile picture is you at the range with an AR-15 then you're publicly advertising what you own. Don't discuss your hobby with known big mouths and don't brag about what you own either. Keep a low profile and you reduce your risk substantially. I don't know if anyone would have the b*lls to stalk gun owners home from the range, but it's not an issue where I live.

As for the ATC, I've only known of one 24/7 carry permit issued, and believe me you don't want to be in that guy's shoes. Some of the long tenured folks at the CFC have supposedly seen one or two over the course of 10+ years which should give you an idea of how often they're issued. Trappers, particularly out west, might be able to get a permit to carry while on their trap line IF they can really sell the CFO on the fact that a rifle is too big for the terrain they travel.

Not 100 percent correct..

Protection of life if police can't protect you for example you snitch against the mob they can allow you to carry any type of firearm anyway you want they say what you can and can't do.

If you work as a prospector, Logger, Wildlife photographer, Trapper, or other bush related job they will only allow you carry a firearm on your hip in a certain caliber you have to train with that firearm in a course then apply with the CFO and they can always deny it if they want because they can issues.

If your life is in danger they're forced to issues it unless you’re not allowed to have firearms then you’re up a creek with out a paddle.

The Bacon Brothers had police sit outside there house 24 hours a day because they were providing protection for them because they refused to issues the permit and if anything happened the police could be sued because of it costing them lots of money.


Now an Antique firearm can be carried by someone depending on why you carry it and were makes a huge diffrence with the law. Carry in the wrong place or for the wrong reason you can end up in jail with it.

For example 1 prospector has 2 claims and he can only carry a firearm on 1 of them because 1 is on the Fraser river and since it's close enough to the city he can call the police so they said no for it and for the other ok because it takes 45-50 minutes to get there. Now he wanted it for the river one because of all the bears in that area and he bumped into allot of them but on the other he had no problems. Thats the irony to it... He can only carry on his claim no where else.
 
Gun culture in Canada and the US is night and DAY. The mentality is so different. Americans take their openness to extremes. Not only is it common to CCW it's actually promoted. With many programs popping up all the time supporting this need for CC (e.g. CCW training courses, DVD's...etc.). If you own firearms in the US you're almost "expected" to be a CC supporter and one that does so. Never leaving the house without packing heat. Turning the US into the "Wild West" again. Very soon...

And something i found MUCH more shocking...more than the prevalence of CC...is their allowing the sale and use of "suppressors" (or as they are called in film "silencers"). They have recently begun pushing the sale and marketing of suppressors. With more than a handful of brands to choose from sold to Americans. Will suppressors ever be sold and allowed for use in Canada? Not in our lifetimes.

What's allowed in the US is mad. And why a few gun loving Canadians have admitted moving to the US for. But for me I prefer our mentality. Even if it means being much stricter by miles. It's very unlikely our country will turn into a Wild West. Too many trigger happy "Rambo" types with CCW in all but one state. And to think...many don't have the right mindset for CCW...take a look on YouTube for gun reviews...and you'll see how brazen Americans can be. Forget about S&W stickers they are making videos in HD showing their faces listing guns they own and guns they plan to buy. Sort of defeats the purpose of getting a CCW permit IMHO.

There's also a lot of naivety accompanying this brazenness.

look up a stat or two on states crime rates vs. CCW holders - an armed society tends to be a polite one ;)
 
What's with your hate for suppressors. Making a firearm ear safe is a good thing. Helps people like me not lose their hearing further. It also stops the urban sprawl getting pissed off about living near a range. I would buy a AAC suppressor for my bolt action fv-sr in a heartbeat.

Where did you do your research? Why is it such a shock that suppressors are becoming more popular?

You seem to think that only the US can have suppressors on their guns but in the UK they are very popular. Consider them a car muffler on your gun, keeps things quieter in populated areas.

You also seem to be very anti American. AND biased

HAH!! He called me "son". :) "Utah"...US transplant? Bringing US gun mentality to BC? Hiding behind chessy cliches
and naive statements? An "armed society" extends beyond CCW holders. And while I'm sure there are law abiding/responsible CCW holders who would never make YouTube videos showing their faces and talking about their gun collections...or consider making gun review videos...shooting up camping equipment in his backyard with automatic weapons...never pull out their CCW even if being physically assaulted...there are many armed individuals out here who aren't very "polite" and of "sound mind".

If you are truely interested in an answer to your question(s), keep reading up on it. But choose your references carefully.

Refer to neutral organizations. Compare police agency stats (FBI has excellent U.S. stats) and get a copy of "More Guns Less Crime" (any volume) by John Lott and start reading.

You will find that the real scenario is almost exactly opposite of what you envision, such as the wild west in the United States.

At the moment your opinion parrots most of what the anti gun people in Canada spew every day. The naivety is yours.

Reading more before posting would be good advice to avoid being trashed as a troll in my opinion.

Oh, and welcome to the site.
