I shot a friends non restricted CZ today.

Shot it a man shaped fiberglass silhouette at 150 meters seated with surplus 7.62 x 39mm with the irons and had all shots in a nice 12" circle.

Very surprised at the relative accuracy of these rifles for what they were intended as well as the nice smooth trigger for a surplus rifle.

I have fired them before but I never really had much interest in them until todays experience.

Now the question, should I sell a rifle I don't shoot to pick one up on the EE? :D
 
They are really reasonable used , as there was one for some time on the E.E. for $550 . Hard to beat that !

Yes, I always keep my rifles as close to stock condition as possible.
I have fired the fixed stock and folding stock versions and prefer the standard solid stock version.

Anything you CZ wizards can tell me about the rifle that I should know about before starting the search?

Edit: I have a folder I shoot surplus through for fun with friends in the mountains and another that I've barbied up with an AR buttstock adaptor, FAB fore end, tact bolt release, ambi mag release, hybrid muzzle brake, Vortex red/green dot and MOE grip that I shoot 3 gun with. I've had over 5000 rounds of surplus through the folder and well over that in MFS non-corrosive through my barbie CZ without a single mag failure, feed failure, stove pipe or any malfunction of any type... I clean the folder after every shoot for the salts, but my second 3 gun toy I only clean every 1000 rounds. I'm still pushing it to see how far I can get before I see a light strike or failure to extract or something out of the ordinary... It's an amazingly simple, reliable and wonderful gun to shoot. With non-corrosive 7.62x39 being more and more readily available and also cheap... How could you not love this gun? I'm planning on picking up a second pair as backups and spares, :D

Get one dude I got my first one this summer and its so much fun. Can't wait to upgrade it with all the cool parts. Then I'm going to get another one. Do it do it now.
 
I forgot to mention , if its possible , shoot a few mags from it before purchasing .
I'm sure you've heard of the " gremlin " .

Mine was fine , but I know some people have gotten it .
Many here have fixed that problem , so it may be of little concern to you .

At first I wasn't sure about a gun I had to strip every time I shot it , but its the easiest thing to strip ever !

I just spent the last two days trying to put my 10/22 back together after fully stripping it lol , and the 858 is a 10 minute job .

i love mine , but sometime the bad gremlin show it ass ! but it do it only one time when it was me , but the gremlin appear always when some friend are firing with the gun -_-, I'm near the 1k round and more with it , looking to tab it or command some spare part and swap the bolt carrier and the striker , it the only possible problem with the CZ , without that little problem they are perfect and reliable

Buy one ^^ ! or two !

Regarding the gremlin, I heard it only pops up if you try to fire the rifle as fast as possible causing the trigger not to reset but a round to chamber.
I have also been told that it is sometimes caused by not holding the rifle firm enough for the action to cycle fully to the rear . Kind of like when people limp wrist a semi auto pistol.

I'm going to read up about it more. If this is the case, I'm not going to stress too much about it.

All you have to do is tap/rack on that stoppage ;)
 
The rifle can short stroke if it doesnt have a solid support in the rear, thats simply the nature of the action and has nothing to do with the trigger. Basically, every CZ has the gremlin factory installed. The auto-sear is not used on our semiauto trigger group, only the disconnector. The disconnector is only actuated by a small lug on the bottom of the bolt carrier. It is only actuated 1. as the bolt begins its rearward travel and then 2. right before returning to full battery. Inbetween that time if you pull and hold the trigger again, it will lower the sear and when the BCG comes forward again the sear will not grab the striker. The striker travels forward with the BCG and lightstrikes the primer due to the lower velocity that the BCG travels at. This happens most in 2 situations: very fast rapid fire when the shooter pulls the trigger for the second shot too soon and sometimes when slowly squeezing the trigger during deliberate fire. Having the trigger pulled while the gun moves around during recoil can cause the gremlin to occur. If you pull the trigger all the way back and hold it until you feel the next round chamber and bolt is in battery, then release you will never experience the gremlin. Most shooter's own trigger control doesnt cause the gremlin to appear, others have frequent issue with it. The CSA rifles have tabbed bolt carriers, this mod can be done to any VZ58 variant. All it does is hold the disconnector down while the bolt is out of battery and only releases it once in battery again. This prevents the trigger from lowering the sear until the bolt is back in battery thus eliminating the gremlin. The only other thing you need to know: Youre done for. I mean it. Your going to buy one, if you try to sell it you'll be forced to buy another. Then you'll buy more and soon you'll be like poor Curtton and Dmitri hopelessly enslaved by your own Czech overlords. You'll still be happy and satisfied, loving life and appear as a normal human being in your daily life. But inside you know different.... :evil:H:S:

The elbow grease statement is quite true as I found the bolt that fastens the stock to the receiver to be extremely tight. I'd like to inject a word of caution to anyone so that they avoid the grief I encountered while replacing the factory stock with a VZ58 skeleton stock from Wolverine. Since the stock bolt was so tight I wrapped the receiver with rags and clamped it in a vise to work on it. It didn't seem to be clamped tight enough to do any damage but to my dismay I found that I had distorted the receiver making the bolt bind. It took a lot of care and gunsmithing to undo my screw up. Just a heads up!
