Why you do not want to get shot with an M16...Warning: Disturbing photograph linked

From the pictures on page 4 it looks like he has lost a good chunk of his leg…

Edit: Biting tongue on Taliban and missing good chunk of head comment…

Not that I would want to get shot with a 5.56 of any kind but had this shot not hit bone and been a through and through I doubt it would look anything like that.

If you read the comments. The bone wasn't struck. The shockwave from the bullet caused the bone to fracture. Don't know about the second gunshot wound set of pictures though.

Yeah, not quite sure I am buying that either..........

That bone is one of the strongest in the body.

If it had that much force transferred through hydrostatic shock, it would have torn his leg off.

Hey I am just posting what they said. Could have hit bone for all I know( I am not an expert on Xrays). As for tearing his leg off it looks like it pretty much did. ;)

Was it an FMJ or HP round?

5.56 M193 FMJ 55gr

Bones are strong, yes, but not to the kind of cavity-inducing trauma that a projectile at that speed can create. Femurs fracture from blunt trauma, falls, etc. so it is not hard to believe their description especially given the soft tissue damage in the picture. Looking at those X-rays I would agree that the bone wasn't struck by the projectile - those look like fairly traditional (albeit severe) fractures not the kind of bone destruction one would see if it was directly hit.

I dont know if buy the "bone was not hit" deal.
Does not look like the typical 556 would to be honest. I have seen many ANA shoot each other within close range with M16 rifles. Looks very similar to a ANP officer that was hit by a 7.62x39 at 300M in pretty much same location.

okay Doctor

Saw this years ago, always made me wonder why they switched to the Belgian SS109

I just ordered a 1600 round crate of Norinco M193 from Canada Ammo. It should be arriving tomorrow, I think I will take a large roast or something similar and test the fragmentation at various ranges. Does anyone care to wager? Will the Norinco M193 Fragment like this? or will I get a through and through with little damage at 20 yards???

The degree of fragmentation of the bullet would suggest to me that, in fact, the shaft of the femur was struck by the bullet...
From the positions of the wounds, it would appear that it was not stuck squarely, but enough energy was shed with the contact to shatter the bone, and fragment the bullet.

Norinco? Well in that case everyone knows that it'll fragment prior to leaving your barrel :p.....

I don't quite follow???

The Norinco guns we get over here are pretty shotty. However, to my understanding Norinco itself makes almost everything the Chinese military uses. Some things they manufacture may be of inferior quality, like the NORINCO AR's we get, but I don't think judging everything they make by the firearms we get over here is fair considering the Chinese military trusts them to make so much stuff

Norinco, is a Chinese aerospace and defense company that manufactures vehicles (trucks, cars and motorcycles), machinery, optical-electronic products, oil field equipment, chemicals, light industrial products, explosives and blast materials, civil and military firearms and ammunition, etc. Norinco is also involved in domestic civil construction projects.

Norinco is also known outside of China for its high-tech defense products, some of which are adaptations of Soviet equipment. Norinco produces precision strike systems, amphibious assault weapons and equipment, long-range suppression weapon systems, anti-aircraft & anti-missile systems, information & night vision products, high-effect destruction systems, fuel air bombs, anti-terrorism and anti-riot equipment and small arms.

I don't think you'd see much difference in damage with a soft point. M193 fragments violently when it hits above 2700fps. The soft point might hold together and penetrate deeper. I also could buy that the bullet didn't hit his femur. There would be nothing left of it. A rifle bullet hitting flesh (70% water) at +3000 fps would easily break bones without the bullet hitting it.
