.17HMR Scope?

Hey guys,

So I have a really nice savage stainless/laminate .17hrm that's been sitting in my safe for probably 2 years now without glass on it. What do you guys recommend for glass? I'm thinking a 4-12x would be perfect as my eyes aren't great and I don't want to go any smaller.

I've been thinking a lot about a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 and I think it's priced well at around $210+tax. It's looking like my only other real option is stepping up to the $500 price range and getting either a VX-2 or a Vortex Viper.

Are there any hidden jems out there in the $200 price range?

I have a 93R17 FSS as well. I still have the original composite stock and am happy with it for now.

Mine has a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 x 40 on.
I don't know that it's a hidden gem but it is certainly an option. I like it. Cost was about $210.

I had a Simmons 6-18X40 on my .17hmr and it was really really a nice setup. I switched to a $600 Minox and im not shooting any better than I was with the simmons. Its not considered a high end scope, but on my .17 it worked absolutely excellent.
 
Sounds about right for the magnification. I had considered using some sort of trajectory compensation on mine, like target knobs, but for its practical range, 50-125 yards, it shoots so flat, its not worth having large target knobs. And I can't see shooting gophers with it at 200 yards and cranking up the elevation.
 
Have a 4-12 AO Diamondback on a Belgian Browning T bolt. Very clear to my old eyes, taken lots of gophers. Might have been a tad more expensive though.
 
I found that with 12x, I could JUST see the .17 holes @ 100 yards. Always thought something in the 14-16x range would be perfect. My last HMR wore a 4-12 Bushnell Elite 3200. Nice looking scope, thought the glass was OK. Worked well enough;

I picked-up a Mueller APT for my Savage .22wmr, nice clear picture @ 100 yards, 4.5-14x magnification. This is probably the last scope I'll ever purchase with exposed knobs though. Got it for this gun as I had a gopher safari planned for summer 2012 and life got in the way. :( Figured the easily adjustable elevation would be helpful if I wanted to start lobbing those 22 mag pills out there a little.

My most recent scope purchase was a Vortex Crossfire II, 4-12x40 with the BDC reticle. I've only shot it @ 70 yards with my 17M2, but it seems VERY clear, and defies the price point so far. Maybe a little bit closer to $300 than $200, but call around. I'd suggest a Vortex, find one that suits you and go for it. The minimum I'd go with HMR is 12x magnification if it's for plinking/hunting only. If you plan on target shooting/bench shooting, a little more magnification would be nice. Nothing over 18x though.
 
Best shot was 114 yards according to the rangefinder. I take the 200 yard gopher shots with a grain of salt, 22 is pushing accuracy past 100. Most shots are taken within 70, just move to another spot in the pasture. I also use a gopher call, does wonders.
 
I am using Meuller for a very reliable and cost effective rimfire scope right now, the elevation and windage is always bang on and repeatable.

For the best bang for your dollar I would recommend Meuller first, Vortex second. From there you will be stepping up to $800 + to get better quality.

Interesting. I would have said that too...with the first generation of Crossfire scopes. The Crossfire II is allot nicer, though I had to purchase it sight unseen~no dealers near me had one. That felt like a big risk to be honest, but it paid off. For the money, I think Muellers are better value...but it was a combination of the the smaller 1" tube AND the easy Vortex warranty that helped me make the decision. Hopefully, I don't have to test that with any scope! (knock on wood) My buddies have all tried that APT on my .22WMR, and all have commented on how nice/bright/crisp the glass is.
 
thanks for all the input guys. Maybe I will move up to a 14x scope but unfortunately there is no Diamondback above 12x. I don't know much about Mueller but it doesn't look like they have anything with a fixed parallax. I definitely don't want an AO scope. I'll keep looking.

dont want a AO. i have a elite 3200 with AO its sweet and i have a Hawke varmint with side focus. i wont but another scope for my rimfires without it. night and day my firend.
 
All my scopes have AO. Weaver Rimfire classic, Weaver V24, 3200 Bushy, Bushy XLT Trophy, Vortex Diamondback, even lowly Tasco Target/varmint and Bugbusters. Don't leave home without it.
 
I have a 6.5-20X on my 17, after using it I wouldn't even consider going smaller for magnification.

You can always turn it down and when plinking or targeting I have never had it off of 20X.
 
Look at the Cabela's Pineridge 17HMR drop compensating scope. I was quiet please with the optics for the price it was quite reasonable. I had it on my Handi Rifle single shot and too it to the gopher fields several years and it did a good job clarity was good.
