i have loaded for the wsm in 7,30 and 325, saum in 7 and 300. they don't do any thing other rounds can't do better. if you like heavy bullets like 175's in 7 mags there not very efficent. same with the 325 vrs 8 mag, the 325 isn't even close. all in all i like the compact rifles the shorts come in more than the performance of the cartridges. i get pretty good performance from my rem model seven in 7saum for the size of the package.

To add to this, the only big difference I would say that matters for most short mags is the ability to run in a shorter action. The difference between a 300 WSM and a 300 WM isn't enough that most people would never notice. Almost all SM cartridges are just a shortened version of a great cartridge that already exsists, but can use a shorter action. And they do look kinda ###y with those huge shoulders and all, lol. I DO like the 325 WSM though, quite a lot actually...
I can not see myself owning any more WSM or RCM or WSSM, or whatever the super short ultra compact uber 500 grain at 5000 FPS rifles, the wheel has been invented, and we are all using Pirelli Radials on Ferarris already anyway...

The short mags are a bit like re-inventing the wheel, I mean the difference on paper in performance on such a compact cartridge is impressive but the in-the-field difference is minimal. I had to grit my teeth when I came upon a hunter who downed a lovely 6 by elk with a 30-30 as I was skunked with my state of the art .300 RCM...I mean really, with what I paid for the rifle, ammo and reloading supplies how dare that elk come to him and not me!!!
Mr Powell, I was up in your neck of the woods this fall looking for a moose, when it happened he crossed a narrow corridor (Iwas walking) in an over grown clear cut, so it was a quick snap shot and I caught him a bit far back but still in the lung area, I walked up to where I last seen him and he was about 50 yds in the bush so I finished the job and had a bull of about 4 years old. I was using a Remington mod7 in 300 RSAUM hand loads with Nosler 180gr Part. The advantages of this set up is the light rifle, well balanced.

The short mags have only one reason for existing IMHO, and that is to wring the best possible ballistics out of a short action in a given caliber. This concept started many years ago with the 600 Rem in 6.5 and 350 Rem Mags, today, based on the shortened 404 case they take off again.
I bought a Rem 700 Ti in 300 WSM because I wanted to put together a super light rifle in a cartridge with enough thump for our grizzlies. After a new stock and some other mods, I came up with a 300 mag that weighs less than 6 lbs with scope. It is fussier to load for than I was led to believe but ended up with good accuracy and acceptable velocity with 150 gn TTSX.
My son used this rifle this year to take his Dall sheep which was the exact intention for putting this rifle together. His 300 RUM destroyed it's scope (imagine that, a 300RUM wrecking it's scope) a couple days before sheep opened so I said take the featherweight and try 'er out. He came home with a sheep so I guess it was a success.

I think 300 wsm is one of the best all around cartridges there is for North America. Accurate short action with lots of hitting power and a wide variety of bullets to shoot, cant ask for much more if you dont want to much or to little.

I say 7 wsm is the best round but then again I like miss vickies sea salt and malt chips. I have found wsm more accurate on new brass then long mags. Also found pike bite best on over cast days 12 hours before a storm
I admit I get a good laugh these days thinking about how many idiots (here on CGN and elsewhere) predicted the WSM's demise, and cautioned anyone buying a rifle to "stock up on brass, that 300WSM will be discontinued in 5 or 6 years"

GH its true man...look at all the other oddball chamberings that are IMPOSSIBLE to get brass for...
WSSM's, 6mm Rem, .300 H/H, .222, WBY's, .25-06, .284 Win, etc.
Guys just CANT get brass for them....

Think of how I fealt with my 7mm SAUM! Thats why I got rid of it. I couldnt find ANY brass, except for the stuff right in front of my nose. And on the internet. And at my local gun shop. And at the 2 gun shops in the next towns over.
Nobody is using the RCM? I was looking at the .300 RCM with Superformance and 165gr TSX - supposedly 3126fps out of a 24" barrel. If true, you would likely be able to get around 2900 fps out of a 16.5" barreled Ruger Compact. That would be a neat little setup.
In Guns&Ammo magazine they had an article of calibres that will survive others while ago.
However only two that were chosen between many other "new&hot" calibres were;
No.1 .204 Ruger
No.2 .300WSM
I bought rifle in 300WSM chambering much before this article was printed on Guns and Ammo magazine and with or without shiny future i just love it.
All this balistic performance between WSM and WM is really not important to me and i would lie if say that i can notice any difference in recoil, accuracy or anything but so as other proud owners of regular magnums when they state how better are those calibres compared to short.
Someone likes porche someone likes corvette they both fast and good.
Taste is something you just cant discuss and no need of comparing.

Really ? I had no trouble at all finding a lifetime supply for mine.... WSS has bags of the stuff.
Sure ... now maybe.
I ruined all my WSM brass by making em better for .358" bullets. The brass seems to hold up really well. But not sure what Ill do when they're done. Probably have to sell the rifle like archie_james_c did. It's a shame really.

Guys!!! Holy man. My comment was tongue in cheek. I have hundreds of SAUM brass STILL. Even after I sold a hundred new ones off. And I have 4 bags sitting at a pals house.
Even though I no longer have a SAUM I still readily have brass available.
