What rifle to "push bush"

I went to southern Ontario to deer hunt with the guys that come up here moose hunting. They generally sit on a field for the a few hours in the morning and evening, that was by far my favorite method. But during the mid day they would push small tracts of bush within the large fields.

My question is what type of rifle are you guys using for this type of hunt? I would also be interested in what cartridge and optics/sights you guys use, because they always switch blockers and pushers the rifle would have to be suitable for the blocker as well.
 
For fast and quick follow up shots while pushing, it's hard to beat a browning BAR in what ever caliber you feel comfortable with... use a light weight optic, not more than 9x at its highest setting, 2-7 would be my choice for optics and '06 for caliber.

Something light, handy and quick for pushing. Something with good energy out to a couple hundred yards. I prefer a savage 99 in .308 with a low, fixed power scope. The BAR is nice. Marlins in .308(mx?) are nice, but hard to find.
 
I use the same rifle I carry in the field as in the bush, as long as it fits you properly and you are used to it, it should be very quick to the shoulder and point naturally. Take the rifle you know you can shoot quick, and accurately with.
 
Benelli R1 for me.

Other guys in the group use BAR's, Rem 760's....

Gotta keep the scope on low power (3-5) for a larger feild of veiw for shooting at running targets.

If you ever find a winchester ranger out there this would be the gun I would carry in the bush...30-30 with a 16inch barrel...it is about as good as it gets in the thick stuff...
 
I've carried a mini 30 for driving the bush, it was perfect for my needs. No optics since shot chances were rarely beyond 75m. If youre in southern Ontario, are you in an area where you can shoot .30 cal or higher?
 
For just pushing thick bush what is wrong with a 3 inch magnum with 00 buckshot in semi-auto? Given there are also shots across fields where extra range is needed, I would think that you could not go wrong with the Browning semi-autos. I however would pick a decent low power scope like the FX-II 2.5X20MM ULTRALIGHT RIFLE SCOPE from Leupold
 
Any gun that I hunt with works for me in the bush as well. If you're using a scope, keep it low powered or adjust it wide if its variable so you can see the animal instead of leaves and pine needles. Open sights work great in the thick bush for fast shooting, but not so good for low light conditions or longer shots.
 
This year I alternated between a mini 30 with 139 gr bullets and a 1-4.5 scope and a ruger 44 magnum carbine with 240 gr and a vortex strikefire optic. Both were easy to carry and fast to the shoulder.

I would have taken my timberwolf 357 but already had two good guns. I have also carried a savage 340 bolt action 30/30 with excellent results.
 
I use a variety of rifles for mixed stand hunts/ pushing bush. Last trip was a Brno 22F 7x57 carbine. QD scope mounts lets me switch between Leupold compacts in 6x and 2.5x.
