What kind of mat do you use when working on your guns?

I'm in the market to get a new mat for my gun workbench, and was wondering what everyone else might use?

Do you use something that's specific to guns/smithing? or just a general purpose mat?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I use a "healable" cutting mat from a craft store. It's about 24"x36" sdo a bit short for a rifle. It works for now but I'l like a roll out dense foam rubber mat. Kind of like a router mat but longer. I had something like it at one time.

I use simple browning mat I bought at my local sporting goods store...But a friend of mine use pretty nice mats with exploded views of differents weapons printed on them. just like the ones advertised on this website http://www.tekmat.com/

Damn-it, beaten to it.

I bought two of these.
A longer one for at home on the coffee table for cleaning the handgun or a rifle and lay out a few things while I do it.
And a smaller one, for putting the hand gun down on the bench at the range (also easier to roll up and transport in my range bag)

Cardboard box from the 4x6 packs. Stack them up to use the bench for other activities like fishing. Throw out the box when it gets dirty; good time to grab more 6 packs.

I've got a yoga mat on my loading/tinkering bench. It was cheap, cushions well and nothing rolls on it due to the pebbled finish. It cost me about $10.

I often use a piece of magnetic sign vinyl on my bench. Helps to keep annoyingly small parts from heading to the nether reaches of the room.

Ex's yoga mat. Guess what hobby I picked up after we split? It doesn't involve downward dog but it is pretty meditative.

I guess I don't let things go to waste.

OK, don't laugh... but I use one of those neoprene bath mats from Wal*Mart. First, the suction cups ensure it stays in-place. Second, it's thick and padded enough to prevent my fumbles from causing any serious damage to my guns. Third, it's perforated - so this tends to ensure that a) anything that occasionally shoots off lands in one of the 'pockets', and b) any of the crap that flakes off when cleaning tends to fall under the mat where it's easy to vacuum up.

I use an Ikea desk pad <ht tp://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30129964/http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30129964/ >

leather and metal backed, works quite well. makes a smoother work surface on my rough workbench.

The old bath towels and dish towels get recycled into shop towels. A folded bath towel so it's two layers thick works well and is easily washable when badly stained. And I can lay out enough to "coddle" the entire length when working on long guns instead of them hanging off the ends and rubbing the bench top.
