cleaning cosmoline off m305?

I am thinking of buying a Norinco m305 but have heard it comes heaped in cosmoline (whatever that is). What have m305 owners used to clean it off when you first get it out of the bag ? Also do you need to strip it down to get it all off?
 
they are very oily. you need to clean the gas system well. otherwise, its cosmetics.

i suggest a lot of paper towels on hand wearing gloves when you open it up. it is messy.
 
Good old WD and paper towel to get the oil/grease off. A toothbrush to work the gunked up areas. Strip it down clean it, hit it with some good lube and reassemble.
 
Tide laundry detergent (super concentrated blue stuff) and hot water in the laundry room tub. Washes all the oil off quickly, then it's your turn to add CLP or other gun oil to the dry, parkerized surface that's completely stripped of oil.

I could not believe how well that Tide detergent worked on the oily M14 shorty that was in the plastic bag. Have at 'er! Enjoy the addiction.

I used Simply Green to clean my M305 off. Comes in spray bottles at Canadian Tire or your local grocery store. Much easier on the hands and the lungs than Varsol or some other solvent.

Spray well. Brush it down well. Rinse it all off well with lots of really hot water. Let it dry and then oil/grease the crap out of everything metal.

I once heard the basics of maintenance for the M14 is wiping grease off some parts and putting grease on others.

Enjoy your new rifle. They are a blast to shoot. Closest thing I'll ever get to an FNC1 ever again here in Canada.
 
When it comes to cosmo removal, two words:

SIMPLE GREEN

It works better than Varsol and just as good as brake clean, without any harsh fumes. Spray with simple green, get at hard to reach areas with a toothbrush, wipe off simple green. Give everything a light coat of oil and where metal rubs metal (Op rod, bolt, bolt raceways in reciever) apply a thin coat of grease. I like wheel bearing grease, a $5 tub will last a lifetime. White lithium grease works too. You don't need to over do it with the grease, just a light coat.

Spray it with simple green, rinse with water, blow off with air, dry it out and re-grease. DO NOT put it in the dishwasher.
 
Strap it to the roof rack, and hit up a local car wash.... (take pics if you do). ;) It's more like a wet motor oil that wipes off with very little effort.
