Sporterizing

OK, so I just purchased my two first mil surplus rifles(mosin nagants M91/30) and have a few questions.

What do you guys think about sporterizing mil surplus rifles, I'm not planning to do anything to serious just swapping iron sights, doing a little trigger work and maybe bedding pillars.

What would you recommend for my next rifle, I was thinking of a SVT-40 as it uses the same ammunition as the nagant and it looks like the supply is starting the dry up. I'm planning on spending 660$ on firearms/ammunition next year because that's how much money I get from my work benefits for "specialized sporting equipment".
 
Milsurp forum does not take kindly to 'sporterizing' unbubb'd military rifles...

Please find something that is already bubb'd for you to tinker with.( sights/barrel shortening/ETC)

I am just giving you a heads up. Do a search if you do not believe me....welcome to the forum...but.....

As pointed out above, most Milsurp folks aren't fond of bubba. With a budget of $660, there are other options to go down. If you absolutely must make adjustments to a milsurp, try to make them non-permanent. It's your $$$, what would you use the rifle for?

Boy are you ever in for it,touchy subject with many people around here.That being said you can do whatever you wish with whatever you have to work with,your choice.

yes talk of sporterizing(or bubbaing) is when the lynch mod comes out. doing non permanent stuff im all for but keep your parts(label them too to what gun they come from)

remember the 91/30 is one of the guns that almost everyone of them was used in combat and has most likely had a few kills same with the svt 40

only guns i fool with are badly bubbaed guns ones that cant be restored

When we hear "sporterizing", the fellow members of this sub forum instantly think of bubba special Enfields and the like. I'm personally not against trigger work or bedding, especially if you are in competition shootings.

My whole idea is if the modifications can be reversed, then its okay.
 
Wow, the reaction to sporterzing was much stronger then I expected. But even I don't really like the idea of permanent modifications to historical pieces. The iron sights I have in mind could always be removed and the originals put back as there is no drilling/cutting/filling involve in the installation. for the trigger work I was planning on buying a spare trigger assembly so it could be restored to original if need be.

Note to self no never use the S word in a milsurp forum.
 
There are lots of bubb'd rifles out there to tinker with,.... So just look around. Remember, when you get started, your going to spend more than the rifle is worth and get none of it back.
 
Doing a bit of a reversible trigger work: sure, why not. Welding a chunk of angle iron to the receiver and slap an NCStar scope on it to be "juss like them snaypers in wold war tew": no.
 
With that $660 do a bit of hunting around for already bubba'd ones. I picked up a sportier enfield for under 200 that I'm not concerned about ruining cause well... It can't get any worse...

Haha, at least folks've been kind in their ''please don't!s'' You're in luck, spare Mosin parts are abound for your tinkering pleasure
 
Instead of spending money on the "sporterization" process, with $660.00 you could pick up a half descent Savage bolt gun with optics off of the EE. Oh, and welcome aboard!
 
As the saying goes, "Turn a $300 milsurp into a $150 sporter", or something like that. In the 50 years that I have been buying guns, I "sporterized" one, and I am still having nightmares about it.
 
I rather approve of the idea of JIHAD in a matter such as this.

My personal preference would be Impalement or Crucifixion or Burning at the Stake, but these all are so very sudden.

Besides, the Stake has such a nasty carbon footprint that I have decided I should be more environmentally-sensitive.

I am now supporting Castration by Duck-nibbling for these offenses.

It can take DAYS, you know......

I agree, altho crucifixion could also take days throw him up along the trans-canada to warn others not to sporterize thier rifles... heck could also throw in the duck nibbling as well, you know for "effect"
 
I don't see anything wrong with any sort of non-permanent modifications. That said, I don't see how you could make a decent sporter out of a Mosin Nagant anyway.
