Hey guys,

Anyone know where you could pick up some 150gr 7.62x39 expanding (soft or hollow) for hunting with a sks. The 123gr is pretty easy to find but finding the 150gr in Canada looks to be next to impossible.

123gr soft point is the way to go. 150gr will start off pretty slow and will likely have problems properly expanding even at medium distances.

Tuxie, pretty easy to pull the 123gr bullets and replace with 150ish grain bullets.

You’re probably close to a CGNer who can do it for you, just ask,,

I've loaded my own and they work ok, but you have to reset your sights. If you want to change back to cheap surplus, you need to set them again. For what its worth, i wouldn't bother.

Agree with others: 123 grain should be as good as it gets for anything you'd want to hunt with this caliber.

Not that you asked for that sort of response, but hey, what's the web for?

I went Moose hunting this year with my father, he only uses Ruger Mini-30. We had a tag for a cow. The cow was shoot at 150m with 123gr and it droped no need for another shoot.
He also shoot 3 point Mule deer buck from 100m early October. Bullet went through that buck right through, buck jumped and run for 10m and droped dead

Within 200m 123gr is a good hunting bullet

I load my 150 grain. You have to shoot 311 or 213 dia. It does shoot very well and i felt confident deer hunting with 150 grain. I did miss a buck so I cant comment on performance. A buddy of mine took a 200lb bear last fall with Wolf 158 grain out of his. His bullet pass completely thru. I figure if you like to shoot the 7.62 then why not load it to. The SKS is really hard on your empties. Good luch

Actually it's closer to .310 for the x39 and some SKS's will shoot .308 projectiles just fine. 1 of my 6 SKS's will shoot .308 150grain Remmy's quite well. If your a reloader it isn't to hard to experiment a bit with heavy's in the x39. I wish those Wolf 154gr were still available!

I tried some 150 grain bullets for the .30-30 velocitys in my Savage scout. (7.62X39) The scout did not like the flat nose bullets (feed issues) I finally settled on 130 grain hornady pointed soft points. Velocity can be handloaded to 123 grain performance and I think the hornady bullet is probably a more consistant bullet than the imported 123 grain soft points. No proof just a thought. I think the 150 grain is too heavy for the M 43 round.

The SKS is really hard on your empties.

That's why you buy a 59/66 and shut the gas off so you can save your brass! I actually know a guy who loads his own ammo and does this.

And, fiddler is correct, the same friend and I were sighting in our 59/66's and he had loaded some 150 gain rounds for the first time and wanted to see how they shot. He needed to adjust his sights as the point of impact was different. It was different enough for him to not bother using the 150 grain rounds anymore, we just shot them up and he never bothered with them again as far as I know. Maybe I'll ask him.

For what its worth, I'm a reloader and i toy around with stuff like this all the time, but the reality is that PRVI soft point in 125gr are excellent loads, slightly hotter than surplus m43 rounds. For my benchmark testing i use a CZ bolt action, I can shoot 5 shots through a dime at 100 yards. I simply don't see how much I can improve on that, and why bother? I picked up 40 boxes of PRVI and I'm done testing loads for this caliber.

That's the bullet I use handloaded to upper 123gr velocity and it's accurate giving me sub 1 MOA 5 shot groups.
No problem knocking anything down with minimal meat damage under 200m.

I have, more than once, put 5rds of federal blue box 7.62x39 into just under 2" at 200m with my Ruger M77mk2 so it is possible for this caliber to be accurate.

I loaded up 4 rounds with 21 gr of IMR 4198 and a Sierra .311 150gr.At 75 yards all shots were stacked touching ,out of a Chinese blade early type SKS! Harold
