Hey guys,

I am thinking of building a 1000 meter PR,

Id like it to have ability to take down the gun into smaller pieces for transport.

Ar15 in 6.5 Grandel
Ar10 .308

or for bolt gun option:

EDM Model 12 Take Down 20 inch barrel.

How accurate are you guys getting these semi autos? Model 12 can do 3" group at 600 meters. Is there any chance to duplicate that kind of performance out from a SEMI ar10 or ar15 with a match grade barrel?

Also does anyone offer adjustable gas ports for AR10 or ar15? Running 175 grain bullets could cause the bold to small into the rear if the receiver and cause receiver cracks?

Thanks for the advice.

Probably not by the time you add glass. Unless you plan to run a crap scope.

Where do you plan to shoot ? Is your range 1000yds ? Cuz you won't legally be taking any AR platform to the bush

At the range i did zero a Bar Shortrack in 308 for a gentleman and by the time he asked me to help, he was all out of ammo so i took some of my reloads for my Nemesis 155 Scenar and this darn semi auto was grouping 1.2-1.3 @ 200 yards, in my book this is awsome precision out of a semi ( thinking of ordering one )... JP.

Not trying to be a dink or anything - I am just a gun club duffer that doesn't know any better. My question is this: why run an auto at all? If your prime concern is accuracy and precision the benefits of fast reloading are negligeable. Years ago I saw a documentary on the snipers working for the secret service...and let me tell you - those boys were FAST. They would fire the shot and have another up the spout in less time than it takes to think about it! The bolt guns are plenty fast in the right hands too.

Not that I have anything against semi autos, I have them and love them...I just don't see the need for them in a precision-only game myself.

Just is nice mecanical stuff those semi, if they shoot very good it add another dimension to the shooting, but for sure precision is a good bolt rifle... JP.

actually it is not. No one said precision shooting has to be slow. Just what most people manged to do with bolts.

I agree bolt can be fast, but if semi can be as good why not?

.6 or .7 out of a bolt rifle is good precision, the same # out of a semi is outstanding, a good bolt have virtually no limit to improve .2 - .3 is easily dooable with the right rifle and load but at .5 -.6 a semi will level about there ( to many moving parts )... JP.

Some us find the process of taking your finger off the trigger to work the bolt unnatural / awkward / unnecessary. I've owned bolts in the past but give me an auto or a lever any day. To each their own. And your comment "I just don't see the need for them..." says it all. Some of us DO see the need for them. Chevy or Ford, Red or blue, 9mm or .45, bolt or auto?

AR can shot sub moa, MR-1 and Swiss will shoot easy sub moa, HK sl8 will do it easy, those are the one i know that can do it, i am sure there is more, on a regular basic i cant find one that will shoot sub half moa... JP.

I have been playing around with this idea as well , and even started building an AR (in .223), and have switched my resources back to bolt guns and good glass.
My reasoning is primarily due to the restricted nature of the rifle and being stuck to public ranges. I just didn't want a big investment in something I can't take out to a nice piece of crown land.
However as far as your question, yes there a a few known 1/2-1 moa AR variants out there, but they are expensive....Larue, Knights, GAP, custom, but a bit of effort to get.
In the less expensive category...DPMS, and ASA. I have read that the ASA is a lesser known company, but makes a great rifle that is accurate as well.
ATRS has one that might be worth at least a call to Rick and Dustin to get more details.

There is definitely a place for Semi's in the precision game, it is simply a fact that recoil will be somewhat mitigated and follow up shots CAN be faster, depending on how good you are. The negatives have already been mentioned, your stuck at the range with it and it's going to be more expensive then a comparable bolt gun in terms of precision. One recommendation I can make that hasn't been mentioned yet is an LMT MWS 308, they are definitely capable and I believe can be had for just under your budget. The only consideration is that they come with a 16" barrel (99% sure on that) so you won't be getting optimal velocities, which is why LMT makes longer match grade barrels available (It's only money, right?). Building is another option, I would head over to the black rifles forum to get an accurate estimate in terms of cost and good advice on components if that's the plan.

The M-14 clones out there with match barrels and Match triggers, stocks, and gas systems are capable of sub MOA all day long. Not restricted and tons of gizmos out there for them COmpanies like Krieger make superb barrels for them. I have played with a couple over the years and had solid 3/4MOA with only a custom barrel and Sierra 2155 bullets.
