hey guys i'm looking at buying my first hunting rifle and am stuck between the 30-06 and the 270 wsm... i plan on having 1 rifle to do it all! i want to hunt small black tail deer and moose with it... i also want to be able to make a 500 yard shot... with practice of course... i also load my own ammo. i have shot a fair bit but just dont have a big game rifle yet. i don't mind heavy recoil

As captonion has stated either one ofthese will do the trick, buy both just to be sure and when you think you have practiced enough on the 500 yard shot,go back and practice some more just be on the safe side of the equation.

ya, it will be years before i can make that shot... i just don't want to get a rifle that can't do that... i'll have to develop a good load and everything as well...
thanks for the help guys

Both are good rounds.

Now, if your ammo falls out of your pocket in Moose Nose North, Saskatchewan, which one will the local store carry?

That is a weak argument for choosing a cartridge. I don't know about others but I don't carry all my ammo on my person when hunting.

Murphy's Law as applied to hunting - the further you are from civilization, the more likely your ammo is to grow legs.

Is it the most important reason for chosing? Of course not, but it's not a bad tie-breaker.

I think the 270 would be more a versatile rifle if it was to come in a 9 or faster twist barrel....both would be good choices but I'd most likely go the 06 route or a 7 mm remington mag.

Is there much difference in price for ammo? I'm guessing 30.06 is cheaper and if it does pretty much anything the .270 wsm will you might as well get the 30.06 as long as there is no calibre restrictions where you hunt.

The 270 WSM has more case capacity, and higher velocity which translates into more energy and range potential, especially if you load it yourself, which I suggest doing for this round. The barrel twist isn't generally a problem, because the 165 gr Matrix VLD hunting bullets will stabilize in a 1-10 twist barrel, and give you some about as good a BC bullet as you can for the caliber, and is good for hunting most anything in North America including elk at a distance. When I was looking for 1 rifle to hunt anything I could wish to in North America, out to distances of 500 M or more, it was my choice (and the reason I got into re-loading).

The only benefit I would give to the 30-06 would be longer barrel life, and cheaper/better availability of factory ammo.

If I remember correctly, I was told by Matrix that a 1-10 twist barrel is on the very ragged edge to stabilize the heavier Matrix VLD 270 bullets. A 1-8.5, or 1-9 is what is preferred.

I haven't seen a case (online) where it failed to, it may be on the edge, but over-stabilized is no better than under-stabilized. Just enough is good enough for me. Besides, if you were going to rebarrel then you would probably wanna use the 175's, or some other offerings

I'm new at this so educate me if I'm wrong but I thought a 30-06 ran out of oomph at 300 or so yards shooting a traditional weight bullet (165-180) for this calibre. With the same case cap I would expect the 270 WSM to have more energy at longer distances using a traditional weight bullet for that round (130-150gr)?

I just ordered a 30-06 myself. I'm not reloading yet and I expect all my shots in Ontario to be well within 300 yards.

Interestingly it was VERY difficult to find a 30-06 in stocking a popular Winchester M70 featherweight. I found 7mm, 7mm rem mag, .308 compact, 300 WSM all easily.
