In my mind "intermediate distances" means about 75-250m. That's no problem to accommodate at the range.

I'm guessing from your videos that you don't mean that far, though.

Anything you can do with iron sights is easier and faster to do with a red dot sight.

Variable power scopes have benefits and drawbacks that RDS don't.

It really doesn't matter what you use for sights, Max. There's pros and cons to all of them. No matter what you bring you'll learn to get the best out of it.

Personally, for IDPA-sized targets out to 300m, my money is on a quality red-dot.

That's one of the best things to do at a class. Try different stuff out while you've got an expert on hand to help figure out what works for you.

I'll try and do one rifle with sites, and the other with an optic. Get some pointers from Earl.

I am going do one with the nxs and one with the H1 aimpoint for the same reason....

one thing I have learned from 3 gun is make sure your sling mount and sling are shootable off of both shoulders, nothing like chocking yourself out while trying to engage targets from your off shoulder.... bfg makes great product, and for a chest rig check out that rack minus stuff... looks great. got to find out if it has pouches will fit lar mags though.

I think I've got my AR bases covered.:) Though I do intend to use my 7.62x39 XCR to keep ammo costs down.

Max, I know you're looking for a NEA 14.5". If you can get it with the 12" handguard I think you'll be happy with the options available for hand positioning. I just got a smokin' deal on a used 12.5" and I really like the longer handguard. You can get your weak hand out far enough to be able to really "drive" the rifle around.

Great looking rigs Stevo. Have your CZ's been relegated to 2nd level back up? Even though as of late I've been drinking the AR koolaid think I'm gonna stick with the CZ platform due to the lack of issues while shooting at the last clinic Maybe try the .223 one for a bit though. Kinda like the 10 rd mags.

Most of this course focuses on operating the platform efficiently and learning a good solid method of running the carbine. Distances generally involve shooting within 25 metres but I throw in drills and tests that pull us back to as far as we can go. On most ranges that's about 200 metres if we're lucky. I don't focus on firing hundreds of rounds just to fire rounds. I teach making every shot count.

For sights and optics, I can't stress enough that you need to learn how to run irons well and then run an optic. I run an H-1 and an Aimpoint PRO on my carbines but also run drills with the optic turned off so I can work with my BUIS.

I also have magnified optics on a couple of my other carbines but I tend to stick with non-magnified red dots.

If you are going to buy a red dot, don't buy crap! There are good offerings by Aimpoint. The PRO can be found for around $459.00 and it has an integral mount. The H-1 can be found for $550 to 650.00. The Vortex Sparc is okay but I've seen quite a few crap out. The Bushnell BRS has actually surprised me. One of my clients has run one on a few of my courses, he shoots a lot as well and his BRS is still ticking along.

Max, I try to keep my guns set up so that they all feel and operate the same and have similar sight systems. This way, I ensure consistency of manual of arms. We'll get the chance to play with a ton of stuff from stocks to grips to iron's, slings, chest rigs, mag pouches, etc. and I'll be there all week in case you want to tweak something and play with it after classes or on lunch. I really love shooting almost as much as I love instructing so, any chance for me to help someone out with a new set up is rewarding to me.

I hate being frustrated with any of my guns and I've been lucky to pick the brains of guys like Larry Vickers, Travis Haley, Todd Jarrett, Spec ops guys, ERT guys, Scott Rietz, etc. to find out what kit works and how to apply fundamentals to complex shooting problems. l also learn as much from watching and interacting with the folks on my courses as I have in courses where I've been the student.

I've only got the 11.75" left. Wolverine ruined one during the mag well conversion, so I traded it in for an XCR, and I sold the other NR to a buddy.

The XCR is almost as reliable as the VZs and more reliable than an AR.

Right on. For some reason when I hear XCR I have flash back to the course you had awhile back and a poor guy kept getting steel .223 casings stuck in the chamber. Glad yours is working fine. I like the idea of a modular firearm.

Yeah, that was in my mind when I bought it but my rifle is solid. That MFS zinc-coated stuff was his problem, I believe.

Stevo; in your 3 rifle picture, what optic is on the top rifle? Also I was hoping for an NEA with the 10.5" barrel. You like the 12"?

And thanx to all for taking the time to post pointers.

Max,
That's a Leatherwood Hi-Lux CMR 1-4x, Wolverine sells them. It's not high-end by any stretch but it seems to work good for me. That's my 3 Gun rifle.

I shot about 80 rounds or Hornady and Wolf steel-case, and some of ACC's reloads through the 12.5" this afternoon and I have to say it's a great setup. Compared to my 10.5" it's a far smoother and less "violently" operating rifle. 100% function with all the ammo types and LAR mags.
