Hey guy still newbie.

Just wondering with the wealth of knowledge around here if someone quickly tell me the major differences between the 500 and 590 series.
I'm sure its already been posted but I'll be darned if I can find it.

over all quality is better on the 590A1

590A1

-parkerized finish
-metal safety
-metal trigger mech
-thicker barrel
-Barrel mounts like a 870 and mag spring can be easly stripped
-overall QC is better IMO

if you want a fantasic tactical style pump go with the 590A1 18.5" which allows you to use different barrels :)

The biggest difference I'm aware of is the way the mag tube is designed. A 590 is more of a dedicated military type shotgun, so you're stuck with its basic configuration (fixed cylinder bore). But you get a higher capacity (with the 20in model) at 8+1 rounds, and a bayonet lug. The 590A1 model also has a thick walled barrel and metal trigger guard and safety, cool features but not really necessary IMHO. The 500 is more versatile in that there are lots of other barrels and chokes you can swap in and out for hunting and whatnot, so you can have one shotgun for multiple purposes. Otherwise the actions and internals are identical. I have a 590 and love it, but I don't hunt. Not bad for skeet though :)

So where the the mossberg persuader come in. I did upgrade the trigger to metal housing and the safety for half the price of a 590... And its 8+1.

Are you referring to the 590A1 version of just the 590 vs 500. From the top of my head...

590A1 - heavy-walled barrel (not compatible with heat shield)
590 - standard barrel (optional heat shield)
500 - standard barrel (optional heat shield)

590A1 - Ghost Ring or bead sights or 3 Dot or XS Ghost Ring
590 - Ghost Ring or bead sights
500 - Ghost Ring or bead sights

590A1 - 8+1 or 5+1 capacity (Thanks ChrisAlston)
590 - 8+1 capacity
500 - 7+1 or 5+1 capacity

590A1 - metal trigger guard/assembly
590 - polymer trigger guard/assembly
500 - polymer trigger guard/assembly

590A1 - metal tang safety
590 - plastic tang safety
500 - plastic tang safety

590A1 - parkerized type finish
590 - parkerized finish (thanks Gunguy34)
500 - blued finish

590A1 - double trigger spring
590 - single trigger spring
500 - single trigger spring

Correct me if I'm wrong... :p

For all intents and purposes it's not much different from the 590 then, but a 590 barrel and the way it attaches to the mag tube is still different, as is the design of the mag tube itself. Your persuader barrel wouldn't fit a 590. The majority of Mossberg hunting barrels are designed to fit a 5+1 mag tube, which is the usual 500 configuration. You could buy a 5+1 mag tube for your persuader or a 590 to use these other barrels, which would effectively make the 590 a 500 again aside from the other features..

I believe you are correct except that the 590's are 8+1.

No probs. I did some research before buying my shotty. If money is an issue, I was going to go with Dilligaf's route but Brownells was sold out of the Mossberg metal trigger assembly, not that it would make much difference for the average shooter but I like metal. :p

The Brownells metal trigger has never been in stock... I bought mine on B.O and got it 6 weeks later....

Same as the 870 metal trigger assembly too! It's been FOREVER on backorder! I've been looking off and on for a shotty since spring last year and then finally bought one in Dec.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall reading that the 590 shotguns are assembled in a separate assembly area and are assembled with more care, checked and tested to ensure that they are utterly reliable for police and military use.

Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Hmm on Mossberg's website I see the 9 shot and 6 shot. 6 shot being 5+1 and 9 shot 8+1, unless I'm missing something? I can only fit 8 in my 590, plus one in the tube.

DOH! Yes, you're right, it is 8+1. I just tried to stuff 9x 2 3/4" Snap Caps into my 590A1... nope. My bad.

Well I have had both the 590 and 590A1, both parkerized. Both were 8+1 not 9+1. Both 20 inch barrels.

I put a knoxx recoil reducing stock on my 590, it came with a pump too, but it wont fit the 590 only the 500. Still works great at soaking up recoil.
