All cost aside which is better 300 ultra or 300 weatherby.Thinking of changeing from my Blaser R8 professional in 300 weatherby to a gunwerks 300 ultra mag.Money is almost the same which would you bring home?

Better for what? Having had both those flavors of 308 I have neither now and am happy with the 300 wsm as my 30 cal magnum of choice. The 300 ultra I had with 200gr nabs at ~3200fps was VERY unpleasant to shoot. Muzzle brakes are not an option for me as I have no desire to shoot those guns without protection on during hunting in the field.

I have both as well as the 300 WM and the 300 WSM, I can find no real world difference between the Ultra and the Wby. I have hunted world wide with the 300 Wby and hunted and used the 300 RUM. The recoil is significantly more with the RUM and it does shoot faster and flatter than the 300 Wby but within normal hunting ranges there is no decernable differences.
The 300 Wby will easily push a 200 gn (my choice in the big 30s) at 3100 fps while the 300 Rum can add 100-150 fps it does so with a lot more powder and recoil and requires at least a 26" barrel or longer to acheive any noticable edge over the 300 Wby.
These are both fine killing cartridges, but I found I didn't need the extra killing power for anything that may be hunted with a 30 cal bullet.

The choice of head stamps should matter little. If you want the gunwerks rifle get the ultra mag, but for the price they want you should be able to say 300wby please and get it.

Having owned both, I prefer the 300RUM. It only adds 100fps to 150fps at most, but it is the ultimate 300 that offers affordable brass, and the recoil is the most that I find tolerable in a hunting rifle without resorting to a brake. That being said, I would likely go with a custom, rather than a Gunwerks.

I own both a 300 wby and a 300rum. Both are a sweet long range hunting cartridge, There such a small differance between the 2 cartridges that I wouldnt get rid of one for the other and think its going to do something the ohter one wont. I shot my moose this year at 781 yards with my weatherby and it was dead with one shot, I shot my goat at 708 yards with my 300rum and it was also dead with one shot. If the 300 wby you have now shoots really well then keep it, If your going to spend a pile of money on a 300rum just because you have to have one, Take a look at an HS precision on consider a custom build. I think there are better ways to spend $10000 dollars then on a gunwerks rifle and get a better rifle and the same nightforce scope for less

my weatherby shoots 5'' at 800 cant imagine that gun werks can be any better.Has anyone held one.Kinda looks abit like a rem 700 action

You may have a tough time doing better than that in a sporter weight rifle. I'd leave good enough alone!

Edit - I agree with Stubblejumper and Quarterman in that I'd much rather get a custom than a gunwerks rifle. I wouldn't be surprised at all if a plane-jane out of the box Cooper would shoot just as well (or better).

All good points I guess I just have an itch, and havent had a ultramag before.I realize there would be no real world difference strickly on paper. My Blaser in 300 weatherby is a nice rig but they are both too expensive to have one of each.tks Robin

300RUM for me there is just something about these beltless cases that I prefer.

I load/shoot 200gr Accubonds & 200gr A-Frames @ 3200fps.

x2

If I wanted a .308 caliber rifle for shooting 500 yards +, I'd probably go RUM. Although if I was going to burn that much powder,I'd probably opt for a big .338 too. :)

But I'd definitely go custom rather than "gunwerks"

"As seen on TV" only goes so far with me. ;)
