Just curious what CGN'rs thought of a .556/.223 for home defence (hypothetically)? Because of óur laws I would imagine a 10 round LAR mag and a non-restricted that takes AR mags would be the fastest access/highest capacity option? What's the best tool for the task?
If this is in the wrong section please point me towards the right one.
Cheers

With the equation of home defense + lar15 magazines + non r
I would choose a bull pup just for size and maneuverability around a tight quarters home
Swinging a su16 / xcr / sl8 / Swiss might bump into this or that and give away your position

If going restricted but sticking to the lar15 idea definitely some sort of ar15 pistol or xcr pistol

I wouldn't want a rifle for home defense...there is something to be said for bullets passing through walls and people. Last thing I want to do is have rounds going into rooms containing the people I would be trying to protect

Yikes! An AR for home defense? If there was ABSOLUTELY nothing else firearm related to use, perhaps, but as others pointed out, a rifle is the worst thing to use for a HD scenerio. There's just too much risk of collateral damage. Heck you can shoot right through your fridge and still potentially kill someone in another room.

With that said...

Sorry comrade, but not in Canada. Ask Ian Thompson how defending your home in Canada goes.

I'm sure the police and Crown would go to extra lengths to prosecute your ass if you ever used an AR-15 to defend your home, given the media attention that rifle has received in the past few days.

Yup. Way better to watch your wife and daughter raped before getting your throat slashed....wouldn't want to risk a charge....

Holy Fukc...as far as Ian?? FACT: he was acquitted. FACT: BECAUSE OF HIS GUN HE IS ALIVE!!!

holy hell

This OP sounds like a mole working for global media trying to get our opinion so they can use it in there next article saying ar15 and the lar magazine are now the gun communities firstchoice

Lighten up, Francis. I was merely poking fun at the fact that it seems many people who use firearms to defend themselves wind up at the mercy of Crown prosecutors. I mean, if you are justified in using a firearm to defend yourself, you shouldn't need to be dragged through the courts. How much did it cost for his defense? 50-60 thousand dollars? But I digress...

IMO .223 with a good bullet and a decent velocity is safer for use in a stick framed house than 00 buck or pistol bullets. The plan is to have the bullet fragment in a sack of meat before it hits any drywall.

Look at what ERT teams are carrying, and ask why the MP5s are not being seen anymore.

But what do I know.

I still fail to see how your statement was in te LEAST bit helpful. Comments like yours can deter people who don't know better from actually considering taking steps....and besides, it really IS better to be judged than carried. Good thing Ian never took crap like your statement seriously...he'd be dead right now.

As others have said, rifle rounds would over penetrate a lot. A pump shot gun can give you lots of shots. Every one has their own thoughts on the subject, but I would think a shoot out on your house is very unlikely even as far as violent home invasions go. But tha'ts just my thoughts, you probably have different things to consider then I do.

Also, as far as the shotgun/ vs SBR AR-15 goes, if it's only a matter of taking one or 2 shots and then the perp runs (I know, you would never count on it- but it's close to what happened to Ian Tompson). If this took place indoors, an 11" bbl AR I think would be way worse on the ears then a 20 ga shotgun. But, i'm not an expert so take that with a grain of salt.

It's called a bad idea. A shotgun is ideal. Pellets should not pass through walls killing loved ones during a fight.

Load Shot only. Going from lightest to heaviest. I would not even loaded slugs. You want the person(s) to leave. If they come back it just keeps getting worse until they get the message.

I'll mail you some batteries for your sarcasm detector if you promise to calm down.
