M-14, M1a, US GI M-14 Inspection FAQs

Very informative thanks.Question whats the story on the connector lock pin coming out?when I recieved my JAE stock they warn about it working lose and included a roll pin to replace it.Is this roll pin a tighter fit? Measuring the roll pin and guessing at the install depth of the one on the connector it would seem it is a bit shorter. Is it that the roll pin holds better?

The JAE stock is inletted to allow clearance for the longer US GI connector lock pin, which sticks out about 3/16". However, the NORC and the SA both have shorter connector lock pins that fit flush with the receiver. Because the NORC is metric, a US GI pin is about .006" too large in diameter to swap in. Options are to turn down the GI pin [ GI pins are verrry HARD ] or drill out the receiver. OR, you can find some 5 MM drill rod [ the axle on some mountain bikes just happens to be 5 MM and good quality steel ] and turn out a slightly longer pin. This is what I did for my JAE stock.

If the short pin is used with a stock that is recessed for the longer pin, the short pin WILL walkout under recoil, and the magazine will; flop around and most likely a malfunction will occur.

I was under the impression they were talking about the connector pin for the oprod retaining pin,I will have to break it down again and see if I can find the other. To be honest I am not really sure what I am looking for. thanks for the answer.

A belated thanks guys for the information.stock came with a M1a pin which was oversize had t have a couple made by a machinest friend and replaced it thanks to Katana for leading me in the right direction

Dwindling Supply of M14S

You say in your very informative piece...

"Remember also that at this time, the supply of M-14 type rifles, old or new, is limited,
and that there will be no more new Chinese or original US GI M-14 type rifles coming to market in the foreseeable future."

Why exactly do you say that? Is there some sort of legislation or something?

Brownell M14 springs

Quote from your thread:
REQUIRED:
$ 75 - Gunsmith inspection to check headspace, bolt fit and other issues.
$ 10 – US GI op rod spring

Will the Wolff Springs offered on Brownells' web site work?
M1A/M-14 Recoil Spring $13.99

This does not inspire me at all...... I don't really know what to say, the m14 looks interesting, but if I'm dumping half a grand to buy it I'd like to not need to dump another $500 into it just to avoid it self destructing.

I know how you feel.
I decided to shoot 308win anyway with much much parts swapped out + bedding job +3 different pain jobs

It's a good project gun, but I can't make it shoot straight!
I now Average 1,5MOA with a scope AND handloads. Sometimes I have a flyer 4 inches away from the group. I'd like to blame my handloads, but I never have flyers go so far with my bolt gun.

awesome article, Lazarus; I was at the Victoria show Sunday and I connected with you, briefly. As well, I have discovered you're on YouTube, and look forward to attending one of your workshops re: tuning my new baby, at least a little bit. ha ha

Learning a lot about my rifle, lemme tell ya. Rethinking the price I paid for the beastie... all's well I think as long as I'm willing to put a bit more into the gun.

As well, m14.ca has been Most Helpful!! Later.

I was really looking into getting an m14, but after reading this it sounds like they can be quite the can of worms. That is alot to look for when buying a gun lol. I really like the gun but that deters me quite a bit. :(

Mattf87, take note those postings are several years back dealing with issues that are mostly uncommon these days as the M305 have come a long way.

Any chance of a m14 guru updating the info for the newer M305's? So that clueless M14 newbs such as myself aren't quite so discouraged/intimidated by the possible sh*t show that you could purchase.

Like Spearhunter said, those are mostly issues with older models. If you a paying attention to the threads these days, you will see these rifles are very reliable. They are cheap to buy and with a few bucks to upgrade a few parts such as springs and spring guides, they will perform just fine. I bought one last spring, put about $65 into it and shoot the sh###t out of it with no problems. Try one, you wont regret it.
