Looking for recommendations from anyone who may have hunted Bison. I've got a 30-06 and have been reloading Barnes 200 tsx, but my local supplier is out and need to get reloading for the season

Thanks

I have shot 3 Bison in total, but all have been with the 338 Win Mag and the trusty 225 Partition.
If I was using a 30-06, I think I would be looking seriously at the 200 Partition.
Keep your shots in the lower third of the chest, and you will be fine.
Eagleye.

What he said, bullet weight matters on those huge critters. I've never shot a bison, but I wounded an Eland bull that are comparable in size with a 168 gr TSX from a 300 win mag.

Personally though a once in a lifetime bison tag would be an excuse for a 375 H&H for me.

id go for big heavy and slower moving for something this big id use my martini henry some times magnum rounds are not always the answer that said the .30-06 should do the job with the right bullet construction and shot placement(most likely why that eland got away) study the bison lear where the heart is and dont take iffy shots

for bison when broadside the leg facing you need to be steping forward for you to get a heart shot or you will hit the leg a quartering shot is a good one too http://www.africahunting.com/firearm-shot-placement/6477-bison-hunting-vitals.html with the .30-06 and 200gr being such a light bullet id not take a lung shot you may not get both lungs that could take a while

we need to have at least have 180 grains here and cal .30 so if you (Squish) need 200 or 220 grains in NP just send me a PM and i ll find you some for you.

all the best.

I think you have a real solid choice already in the 200 grain tsx.

I have not killed a Bison - but used that bullet to kill a Grizzly a few years back.

If your gun likes them - I would try to find a supplier elsewhere.

Pm if you wish and I can take a look down my way for some for you.

I used a 286gr Norma RN in my 9.3x62 to take my bison last fall and despite the very up-close range it performed quite well. The legal minimum was 200 grains and I wouldn't hesitate to use a 200gr Nosler Partition on bison. If I was anywhere near my reloading stash I would dig out the part box of 200 TSX that I have in there to get you in business.

I'd like more info on what you mean by "legal" minimum. Where were you hunting? Every regulation I've seen was a minimum of 175 or 180gr. Specifically if I remember correctly, BC was 175, and Alberta and Yukon were both 180. I was considering trying for Bison in Alberta with a 180gr ttsx, so I'm curious which legislation had a 200 minimum.

Thanks!

Northwest Territories. 30 caliber minimum and 200 grain minimum as stated in the Wildlife Act. Regulations were written in the dark ages and they haven't updated them since. So I played it safe and went plenty bigger and heavier.
