According to sources known serial number range for 1941 production is from 176 to 3685q with an estimated production run of 155,000 rifles.
In 1941 the code used to designate Gustloff was changed from “337” to the letter code “bcd” Laminated
stocks and handguards continued to be exclusively used. The date code was changed from a four-digit
date to a two-digit date. Other changes included the use of a “cupped” buttplate, and a front sight hood
that had been authorized in December of 1939 by OKH. The 12.5" cleaning rod that had been made
standard on March 10th, 1939 is now used.
 
bcd is the code for Gustloff.

Just my opinion but the black paint on RC's is part of the history of them. I just think by removing the paint you are removing some of the history and possibly collector value on them. When I was looking for my RC I would have passed on any that were modified like that. Just my opinion though.
 
Agreed jb. While I think the RC is a collectible varient, it must be in original condition.

Unless its nasty late, then strip it and let the phosphate shine! Haha
 
We shall see what's all original and not for sure.
The problem with black paint is that it does come off all to easily when you don't want it too.
Not the first Russian refurb I've had in my collection.

I was guilty of restoring some RC's (proper parts/stocks, removing the paint from the bolt take down disc, etc) but I left one in original RC condition. If I were to purchase one of these recent imports I think I wouldn't touch it. The RC is a legit historical variant of this rifle.

This does give many individuals a chance to own a K98. I was excited and not even upset about the price, however the stock repairs/straight bolts/peened markings have turned me off - at least until I can handle one.

I am better to save my money and to purchase an all matching from the US or a bolt MM from the US. If I shop around, those rifles are only double the price of these RC's.
 
If anyone is watching EE I just saw two nice K98s go for $750 & $800 all matching.... The 750 rifle has a few sling holes in the stock but nice enough for the money and could be repaired easy enough. The one for 800 was a fantastic deal and didn't last long, 1938, matching, minty condition with 800 rounds of ammo!!!

So if your looking at an RC for $700+ in crappy condition, all your paying for is the "X" and getting an ugly rifle. I would love to have an RC for maybe $400'ish but I just can't justify the price when there are nice rifles out there for same or a little more... Be patient, buy well and don't feed the machine that screws us all in the end....
 
I never saw the 1938 k98 rfle for sale, so cannot comment.
But the other I believe is a postwar force matched example, still nice, buit in the collecting world, not correctly considered "all matching".

Neither gun recently on the EE was anywhere close to original condition. Both were refurbs with force matching as joe stated.

The bnz, while still a cool shooter was so far off what a bnz45 should be it was laughable. Only as far as originality.

so true neither were matching so in my mind not such a good deal .The rc on the other hand are what they legit RC rifles and left as they are have a part in any good mauser collection

I couldn't get past the one where bubba drilled holes. It's not original anymore.
BTW, the recent RC's are quickly disappearing even at the prices stated. They won't get any cheaper and I've already decided not to tamper with mine and leave it as is.
RC is a valid collectible for historical value. Right next to my Mosin Nagant infantry and sniper refurb and TT-33 Tokarev. The Battle of Stalingrad for the most part.

the longer you wait to buy your chances of getting a good one diminish.iI know its been said befour but there not makeing anymore ,supply and demand dont sit on the fence act now or look back in six months and say i should have bought one.The worst synario is i have a seventy year old hunting rifle
 
I bought #1 from Frontier and picked it up today. DOT 1943, receiver and barrel Waffenampts intact (with eagle over swastika) and unpeened. No XX's over numbers. Light electropencil numbers on bolt to match original receiver serial number. I haven't cleaned the bore, but I can see very sharp rifling. Stock is laminated and is what it is - sanded down and shellacked - but solid. It will clean up nicely and all in all I'm very happy with it. No one has them locally, and I've been waiting a long time for a K98 shooter. Now to buy capture screws, cleaning rod, sight hood, sling and ammunition.
