Im looking for some info on Scout Gun Optics.
i currently have a Ruger Scout (left handed!) and i have been shooting it with the iron sites since i got it.

but i am curious about trying this relaxed eye relief forward mounted scope stuff that everyone talks about (good or bad).

so when i did some looking around i found 2 'scout scopes' on the market that seem to be made for this purpose.

the Burris lists 2 scout scopes, the 2.75X Scout and the 2x-7x-32mm for around $300.
and Leupold lists the FX-II 2.5x28 mm Scout Scope for around $300

those 2 look to be the entry level scopes for scout rifles.
anyone have either of those.
any pro's or con's for either of them?

OR...... do people go with something a little more new like a Red Dot Reflex sight like the Burris Fastfire II?
or can you see through those effectively if they are forward mounted?
 
I haven't used either of them. There is also a Weaver, their K4 Scout (4x28mm) for about $250.

it all depends on the range you want to shoot, I'm not supper familiar with a lot of red dot but the one I ha e is good as a scout role on my cz. id say a cheap red dot as a scout is good to 50-75 yard imo a good one with smaller dot would be able to be stretch out further. my utg red dot on the top cover of my cz the dot att 100 yard covers the red portion of the canada ammo target (something like 6-8" across)

if you want to shoot 100-300yards id forget about the red dot id go with the variable power scout optic.
 
I have the leupold, at the time and possibly currently scout scopes were in short supply
Its nice and crisp, sleek, no complaints, not sure if id want more. Shoots great with both eyes open, more mag might hinder that

Im always worried it will get knocked around too much. Id like to see somthing tougher on the market
 
Magnification in scout scope is not very critical, anything 1,5x-3x is A-OK. IMO ER and FOV are much more important, aim for 9" or lower ER and min 20' at 100yds of FOV. 2,5x32mm Leupold (2,3x actual magnification) has 22' FOV and 9"ER is a good one but expensive b/c Korth Ind. monopoly. Burris 2,75x20mm has only 15'FOV and thats low if you want to follow fast moving animal with scope. I have made in Japan 1,5x20mm Hakko with ER 8"-21"ER and 27,5' FOV, perfect on my 336 Marlin in 35Rem and sniping game up to 200m is no problem. Another good one is older Redfield 2x20mm with 8"-20"ER and 24'FOV perfect on my single shot LH Rem 541 in 22K Hornet. Recently I bought 4x32mm Simmons with 10"-26"ER and 22'FOV that I am thinking to put it on my future LH Ruger mod 77 35Whelen project. Look arround in gun shows and even here in EE for little older scout and pistol scopes (some of them will work very well as scout ones) for the best specifications and value.

so that is the Leupold FX-II 2.5x28 mm Scout Scope that i listed in my first post?
you like it?

i noticed you have it mounted super uber low.... as most scout scopes are.
any thoughts on mounting it on high rings with holes in them so you can fall back to the factory irons for really close shots?
 
I went with a Leupold 2.5x IER on my Guide Gun. I put it in low Burris ZEE QD rings. It's a great setup and can be detached almost instantly so that I can use the ghost rings if needed.

So with the quick detach rings do you have to sight it in again when you put scope back on. Or do you put a witness mark on mount just wondering how easy it is to put on and off.

I mark the spots where the rings meet the rail with red model paint so that I can re-attach in the field. It's good enough fro hunting deer inside 150m.

The BRNO shown above has a lugged rear ring so it re-attaches consistently without paint.
 
I've had two Burris and one Leupold scout scopes, on various scout rifles that I have owned. My current SR wears a Burris. Mount them (assuming you don't have built in mounts ) with the Burris scout mount and use a Pilkington lever for a QR mount to access your iron sights and you're good to go. - dan
 
Anyone use any QR mounts that do better then minute of deer?
Im running leupold rings with the stock rail and it can move 6-8 inches at 100 yds
Havent done it enough times to notice any consistencies #and i try to be as careful as possible but i should think it would come back closer to zero

Iv seen some qr set ups that are one large heavy piece where both clamp rings are attached to a heavy qr base, mostly at the tacticool store next to the nightforce stuff. Really expensive too if i recall. Would one of these hold zero better?#

So u like the Burris over the Leupold?

Why?

Just trying to narrow down my search, and thanks for the info!
 
Love it as is. I usually shoot it with both eyes open. Jeff Cooper style.

the Burris fov is too small, Leupold makes 2 variable scout scopes, the Weaver 2x pistol scope is very small and more fov than the Burris
 
The Hi-Lux long Eye relief 2-7x32 is available from Wolverine who are a CGN sponsor. It would be interesting to know how good this scope is when mounted on the Ruger scout.
