Build whatever you can find a barrel for....seriously
If you just want somthing different, there is nothing that is more entertaining than a big bore ( 458 Socom etc ) for ####s and grins. Puts a smile on everyones face everytime at the range
A 458 Socom loaded with the Hornady 325 Grain flex tip bullet is just so goofy looking its ###y !
The novelty of 300Whisper , 300blk etc wore off for me since we can't have supressors. Great if you want to have a shorty barrel
Between the 6.5 Grendel ( now a SAMMI round ) and 6.8 just build whatevery you can get a barrel for.
Something of note is there are different SPC chambers . My Noveske is a SPC II which is NOT the standard SAAMI chamber dimension. All load data would be fine with both. Some off the shelf load is pushing the pressure envelope of the SAAMI chamber
If you want somthing different both 6.8 and 6.5 will be a good choice. However, if you are trying to built a long range bench gun, then the 6.5 Grendel has the edge for the following reasons
- far more choices of long range projectiles for 6.5 vs the .277 bullet choices
- look at the BC of similar weight projectiles. Advantage for 6.5 . This is why the lates "308 Win " long range cartridges are the 6.5X47 Lapua, 260 Rem , 6.5 Creedmore
- the 123 Gr Scenar has higher BC than all their 308 dia Scenars
- Lapua doesn't make Scenars in .277 . Berger doesn't make match bullets in .277
- The Remingtion and SSA 6.8 SPC brass is "decent" brass. The Lapua made 6.5Grendel brass ( the AA brass is made by Lapua as well ) is outstanding.
- I can make plinking 6.5 Grendel brass by easily fireforming 7.62X39 brass after one pass of sizing die. Scrap rate is very low ( less than 5 in 100 )
All this is academic, since you are going to have a hard time finding Grendel barrel in Canada
