Well.. headed to the range today to shoot my New M14.. unlocked it, loaded the magazines I had, got on the firing line.
Loaded
safety off
Aimed
Fired... or not

Pull the trigger - click
So I eject the round and remove the mag
Inspect the bore, inspect the round (no firing pin mark)
So I reload again. try again and click.

suspect my firing pin in my bolt is busted T_T... brand new and never fired before T_T
Need to strip it tomorrow and contact seller to see about warranty.

&*$#%& ^&#$ ^&.... me at the range after this happened.
I had 3 other shooters inspect it in case I was a dumb ass and was doing something wrong....

anyway then went to the pistol range and took my rage out on some defenseless targets

Glock 17 gen 3 and a Soviet Tokarev [ST-TT33] and assuaged some of my anger and disappointment.. but it also appears I can't hit worth anything at 25m (10 shots = 2 on the paper) on top of everything else... Police had our nice pistol range closed because some dumbass somewhere in the city reported a bullet through the roof of their house so our range was blamed again.... (*crosses fingers it was not a range member)) so I had to use the longer pistol range (for those who are good!)

Otoh : usgi bolt order time :)

cosmoline clean as far as I can tell but I didn't strip the bolt (big hands, small springs = me losing things)
Going to strip the bolt tomorrow to see if that is the issue. I didn't find cosmoline in most of the rifle but who knows.

Sh*tty deal to get to the range and not be able to shoot it. Thankfully though you had the pistols so it wasn't a complete waste of time. As for the 305 problems I've got no clue, have been toying with getting one myself lately. If the problem is not resolved, or you get screwed over by whoever you bought it from (I'm assuming a store) I would appreciate a PM so I don't buy from them (rare, but does happen every once in awhile).

As for the 2/10 at 25m, just work on that slow steady trigger squeeze and you'll have them all on paper before you know it (not necessarily in a tight group though). Good luck

Then don't strip it. Boil it for a while, blow it out and let it cool then spray with WD 40, blow it out again and lightly oil it.

The easy way to clean the bolt is to use break clean . Do not oil your firing pin ! Oil the outside of the bolt, but the pin should be run dry.
Keep us posted and good luck !

As others have said it may be your firing pin is gunked up with cosmoline......take the bolt out and shake it.You should hear the firing pin moving back and forth as it is a floating type.Taking the bolt apart can be another source of aggravation ....use boiling water or brake cleaner.

I bought a 2007 M14 from Marstar, went to the Hungry clinic & promptly stored the rifle for two years WITH the hammer in the cocked position...

When I went to the range, it would fire commercial ammo, but NOT the military stuff with harder primers...

The solution for me was a new hammer spring, which Marstar replaced for free!!! (Two years AFTER I bought the rifle & it was my fault!)

So, check your hammer spring to...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. Once you get the rifle sorted out, they really are TONS of FUN!

Field strip the bolt assembly from the rifle. If the firing pin channel is clear you should be able to reciprocate the firing pin by shaking the bolt assembly.
(It's a free-floating firing pin).

When the firing pin in the forward position, can you see the tip protruding from the bolt face?

Did you see any marks on the primers on the cartridge(s) you tried firing?

BTW, when testing a new semi-auto, don't start off with a full magazine. Some failures result in full auto, which can be very dangerous if you're not expecting it to happen.

Be advised that stripping an m305 bolt is not a piece of cake.taking it apart is not too hard but putting it back
Together is.the ejector spring is very long and requires lots of effort to compress it back into the bolt.
Parts may fly out and get lost.
Strip/reassemble the bolt in a small room or a large ziplock bag.

no marks, good advice about magazine , pulling the bolt this morning... going to give it the shake test.

will report results. (store I bought it from is not open till monday so can't call them till then if it is as real problem)

:) is why I didn't in the first place... thanks for the advice

I had one that was .020 over max on headspace. You might check that out.

If you dont have headspace gages try putting strips of tape on the back of a 308 case and see how many strips it takes before the bolt wont lock.

Ok I have the bolt out and the tip does fall forward when tilted. This confuses me a bit as it was the most likely point of failure. The problem is more serious than just cosmoline or a stuck pin.

Dry fire it and watch to see if the bolt is closing fully, and if the hammer is cocking and falling fully. I skeptical about it being a headspace problem.

Concur detail-stripping the bolt assy is painful unless you have the magic tool. I have one that works for both the M1 Garand and M14, but they are uncommon and pricy.

Concur that headspace problems are one of several possibilities for the symptoms described.
Receiver safety bridge could be another issue, but that is less likely on a new rifle.
(Prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin when the bolt is out of battery).

Our-of-spec firing pin is also possible, but that is less likely too in a new rifle.

Have the firing pin protrusion checked when you are getting the headspace checked.
