So i have been debating on what gun to buy! I have shot a couple AR-15's but am yet to shoot a vz58.
I want to put some different accessories on it like acog, vertical grip and all of that and am also some what interested in 3 gun and just shooting around, i know the one big advantage to the vz is that they are unrestricted but I am not sure what would work better for a newer shooter.

Having owned both for years, the AR is light years ahead of the VZ in regards to ergonomics. With that said, the VZ is much cheaper and unrestricted, and has always gone bang when I pull the trigger. I've shot out to 200 yards with it, and was able to hit soup cans pretty regularly with the somewhat archaic stock sights out that far.

Realistically, your goal in decisions like these should always be to get both!

Also, AR's are getting tougher to find and used ones will continue to rise is price.

I would start the hunt for an AR now!

vz/cz all the way , i was shooting mine in the snow a couple time this past month and no prob , you can have some snow in the mag it always go bang , only the ice can be a problem when you stop shooting because it frost ! snow> water> ice !

AR15 Pros
- Ergos
- Accessories
- Accuracy
- Good mags etc
- Mall Ninja Approved
- Easy to find ammo (except when gun control laws cause ammo hoarding)

VZ Pros
- Cheaper to buy both rifle and ammo
- Will go bang no matter what ammo you run
- More robust but less accurate especially at distance
- NON-FREAKING-RESTRICTED
- 7.62x39 packs more punch than .223

For me, its Red all the way now.
There are alot of options and accessories now for the VZ58 and more popping up each day.
Soon the gap in Ergos and options will be narrower as right now its pretty huge.
I will post pics of my new VZ58 once I have received the rails, bipod/foregrip, and flash hider. It wont be an AR but it will be pretty damn functional.

I sold my CZ858 and bought an AR... I love the AR (but bought an LMT ($$$$))... but I miss my CZ as well.. I think the only solution as someone mentioned is to get both ;)

The 7.62x39 are a nice size... like a short 308... the 5.56 looks so small compared to the 7.62 :)

I have a CZ 858 and love it. With mods it's a great gun and I'd say nearly as good as an AR 15 (although it isn't as accurate). That being said an AR is better out of the box. Like others said it depends on what you do with it. If you shoot mostly at a range get the AR 15, if not get the Vz.

ya.. I want to get a Tavor as well... waiting for stock again. Then again, the price is definitely steep, and my friends are barely over telling me how my last firearm could have funded 4 trips to vegas.

I wanted an 858 and an AR so I fugured the VZ58 in .223 would cover both.. got it cheap from a site sponsor. needless to say. they day it showed in the mail I traded it in on a CZ858 and Ordered the AR I really wanted.

I have both and love both but the ergo's on the AR plus super easy to mount optics makes it the slight winner in my opinion. I do like the 7.62x39 round better than .223 though.

I would pick the AR every day of the week and twice on Sundays. It's more modular and you have a ten round mag which will help you in competition.
