K98a - any of those in Canada?

Hey everyone,
I recently came upon a very nice picture of an 1918 K98a war bring-back [Link] some American put on his tumbler. Now, I've been flirting with K98k's for a while, but I instantly fell in love with that model, more so than any other.

Problem is, I have no idea how common they are or how much they usually run for. Will this be another heartbreaker like the G43 or FG42? Or more like SMLE No. 1 Mk III? I know it obviously isn't very widespread but, heck, I'd even be happy with a repro (don't burn me).

My buddy has an all matching K98a
 
There's an all matching one in Surrey, that I gave to my nephew about 15 years back. They were not uncommon then.
 
I have a matching 1916 Erfurt, with a bullet strike and two chunks missing out of the stock from possibly shell fragment hits. I just wish she could talk.

You do see a number of them that are double dated, those are more common then ones, like my 1916, that were not touched after WW1.

Danzig seems to be the common maker with 1918 being the common date. Erfurt was the primary producer of the Kar98 during WW1 and, at one point, was making close to 1000 carbines a day and well into the double suffix letter ranges.

Many of these carbines, along with their long rifle cousins, were destroyed after WW1 due to the Treaty of Versailles so finding them nowadays unmolstered is very difficult.

Given past prices I have seen, expect to pay atleast $600 up to $1000 depending on maker, condition, matching numbers...etc.

Have you tried therapy? Maybe the gun's just shell shocked?

Sounds reasonable, actually. Regular K98k's seem to run ~600 at the moment. That extra few hundred bucks would be worth it. Guess I should start saving up.
 
I have a Danzig 1914 which has been factory refurbed a couple times - Czechoslovakia in 1923, Spain some time after that.

Nice, handy little rifle; I can really understand why the Stosstruppen liked them for assaults.

Small-ring '98 action: lightweight! Have to dig it out so it can be played with.

It sits on the rack with the Mauser Gew 98 and the two of them hum "Heil Kaiser, Dir" ever so softly together. The SMLEs on the next rack try to drown them out with "God Save The King" and "Rule! Brittannia". It's a proper madhouse around here at times. I really should specialise, but it's too late.

If the Mausers sing "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" and the SMLEs sing "God Save the King" at least they can sing to the same tune. I'd love to see some pictures if it's not too much trouble? Also, it's never too late to put some order in one's arsenal, haha.
 
Right now it is claiming "gastgewehr" status should it be expected to co-operate. It says that it has been far too long teated as if it were "Kriegsgefangengewehr" and demands to be PAID for anything which has occurred since November of 1918. We appealed to the Lee-Metford and it snapped, "No bloody way! Queen Victoria would NOT approve.". The case, therefore, has been appealed to the Schmitt-Rubins for a binding decision, although we will go as far as the Beaumont-Vitali if this really has to go to the local branch of the International Geweersgericht.

No matter what, if it is to be photographed, it is demanding modelling fees but it has not yet appointed an Agent. Sounds to me as if the whole darned crew wants a day at the range, so I have promised them one after the ice and snow go away and the world turns green again.

And all of THAT gives ME time to figure out how to start an Image Shack account! I can't get Photobucket to work.

I'll haul the little monster up here and try out my new camera on it. It does have some interesting markings.

agree, that's about right, although I missed a nice one two months ago at a gun show in Ontario, which went for $350.00

imgur.com is your friend - you don't even need an account if you just want to throw up some pics real quick and don't mind them getting replaced 6 - 12 months later. Probably the simplest, most straightforward image host I know.

Badger gave you a direct LINK to likely the finest photographic "tour" of a rare firearm you will EVER see.

In this case, the firearm is a DOUBLE-DATED Kar98a, the double date indicating that it served in the Reichswehr after the end of the Great War.
