Boyd stock experience

Thinking of making a stock for a Marlin 917 rifle, just a custom project to do as we wait for spring.

However I was looking at some Boyd stocks and it looks like they are reasonably priced. I can hardly buy the materials for that let alone my time spent shaping and inleting a stock from nothing.


For those who have ordered from Boyds what does the final tally end up being once you get it to your door in Canada??

$99 USD sound fine now but what is the final damage on an average order?

Mine came to around 110-120 all in for the $99 stock. Cant beat their pricing

I hated the factory stock on my Ruger M77, and figured why not give them a shot ... Real glad I did !!

My Boyd's "Tacticool" was $135.90CDN, all taxes, shipping etc. included, delivered to my door. BTW, I was VERY impressed with the quality, finish, and inletting of my new stock. I believe it to be a great value, for sure.

No Boyd's stock that cost $99 was shipped to Canada for a $110-$120 total... I have dozens of Boyd's stocks and have ordered for years... they are an excellent product... years ago they charged $39.99 shipping on each order, regardless of the product total... in the past three years they have increased that to $44-$50 depending on how the stock inventories... I have not ordered from the new website, but I imagine the prices are the same. Your total cost of a $99 stock will be $145 to $175 depending on whether Customs gets their "hooks" into it... I would say that more than half of my stocks got through without customs fees.

IMO... they are worth it.

What about if you have to buy the floorplate and trigger guard from them? That would push the cost over $100. Would you have to do it as two separate orders?

My $99 stock for my Savage ended-up being about $145 landed. My metal bits & parts for it to complete the job were about $50 (though not req. for a 917 I don't think). So...to convert my black tupperware stock to a Boyd's was about a $200 proposition~but worth every penny. My only issue (and this is a character flaw ) is that it is so nice that I baby this rifle instead of using it like I used to. Good problem eh?

What's the issue with your 917 stock, I have one in 17M2 and I kinda' like it.

That's true, unfortunately. They were deemed "military technology" solely due to the name "Tacticool", supposedly. I suggested that Boyd's re-name them "Pink fuzzy baby kitten bunny hugs", but for some reason, the name just didn't take. I suspect that Canada just isn't a big enough market for Boyd's to try to fight the US Gummint on the decision.

Thankfully, however, you CAN order a Boyd's Tacticool direct from Savage, albeit at a slightly higher price (many of Savage's current line of rimfire rifles come equipped with Boyd's stocks).

I have 3 boyds stocks bought two thumbholes within the last couple of months. both where $149 to my door in New brunswick. Buy one you won't be disapointed.

I thought of one beef with boyds. They dont make any left hand thumbhole with right hand bolt stocks. I wouldnt mind getting one in sky for my next cz but looks like that wont be happening.

About $145 to my door here in Medicine Hat, AB. Pepper laminate thumbhole for my Marlin 60, which I had to modify a bit with a round rasp to fit the tube-mag.

Even with the work I had to do with them (which you not longer have to since they make separate stocks for both the 795 and Model 60,) it was worth the price. Finish was slightly rough inside the thumbhole, but it was cleaned up in five minutes with some steel wool. Fitted nicely, extremely comfortable to shoulder and use.

Next rifle I got that Boyd's makes a thumbhole for is getting one, that is for sure.
