What lever actions were "short throws"???

I`m in the market for a lever action 22. I want something old "say 30+ yrs old" but I want a short throw and I don`t like those huge type handles I`ve seen on Mares leg ones. What models and companies made them?? Give some models of the good ones to get ahold of. Thanks,Darcy
 
The Browning BL-22 has a much shorter throw than any other major lever action .22LR that I know of.

There is also the Marlin 56 or 57. But the stocks are large so a little unusual feeling.

I know they still make them still. When dealing on one, whats to look for to set it off as an old one or are they noticeably different?
 
Get a BSA Martini. Short throw, fast lock time, super accurate. And, they are all definitely more than 30 years old.
 
Short throw means roughly 30° to rack and cycle the action.

Here are the models i know:Browning BL22, Marlin Levermatics (uses a cam-and-roller system), Remington 76 "Trailrider"(only lever Remington ever made, uses a rack-and-pinion system). Ruger 96 aswell, it uses the 10/22 magazine.

The last three guns are tougher than heck to find, goodluck. I got lucky and own a few of them. Definitely are hoot and a holler to get out and use.

Some other fast actions are:falling/rolling lock/martinis.. but they arent repeaters. ;)

The Browning BL's have the shortest throw... I have two, and they are my LEAST favorite of my lever action rimfires... Because I HATE the short throw! I hear people praising lever actions because of the short throw and it is the very thing that I like the least about a gun... Nothing feels as good as a long stroke on a lever.
 
Love my bl-22 don't even take my thumb off the stock, just kind of fleck my fingers and its cycled, i have even matched a 10-22 for speed.

I very much agree. I have a BL, and it is a great gun for sure, but I love my Henry; nice dedicated throw, and smoother than a small lake at sunrise.

I tend to agree, the enjoyment I get from shooting a lever action comes from cycling the action more than anything. That said, to each their own, I hope the thread has been helpful to the TS.

Define "old Henry", do you mean prior to the brand being "resurrected" by Anthony Imperato and production dating back 150 years or so ago? The current Henry Repeating Arms is relatively new and resembles Benjamin Tyler Henry's defunct company in name only. That's not to say they don't make good guns, because they do (for their price point), but they're definitely not "old".

Old enough that a guy is going to "stand up to the plate to purchase" and old enough that "not every person and their neighbor can run down to the local gun store and purchase new".

You probably won't be happy with the "new" Henry. Although smooth, they don't have the build quality of older guns, and not exactly a short throw.

It pretty much leaves you with the BL-22

I had forgotten about the Remington Nylon 76 in the short throw category. And I've got one of them... Also have the Marlin 56 Levermatic.

Despite a love of lever actions another favorite one is a pump. Browning Trombone is a really sweet little rifle, the action is even slicker than a lever. Just sayn'

Its hard to tell what the pump goes for? I seen one listed in an auction with 2 bids at $250. I`ve seen another way up close to $1000.
