Please feel free to add any info that isn't already here guys but please keep this thread to strictly dating information. If you have questions about your firearm please start a new thread, thanks, Joe.

One of the best dating calculators I've found is here at this site. It has Savage, Winchesters and Marlins and Henry's.

Remember that if you are dating an A series Savage rifle that it will not have the info on any Savage rifles with a serial number starting with a letter. You can however p.m. me as I do have the data on those, just to large to put into a text page.

The Alaskan could be had in either a 338 Win mag. or the 375 H&H mag. It came with a 25" barrel.

African:
The African was available only in the 458 Win Mag with a 25" barrel.

Winchester Model 88 & 100 Serial numbers & date of manufacture

SERIAL NUMBER LETTERS : Prior to 1968 no serial number prefix was used. As the result of the Gun Control Act of 1968, the letter "H" was assigned to the model 88s while "A" was used as a suffix to the model 100 serial numbers. You may see a suffix to a serial number of "A" on some earlier guns. This appears to be possibly a duplicate or replaced receiver.

For earlier Winchesters (say, pre-WW II), dates on the web, and those contained in George Madis' books, are badly off for certain models. Recently, the Winchester Arms Collectors Association has created a website were accurate dates can be obtained. It is located here http://winchestercollector.org/dates/

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

Month Codes: [first letter]
B - L - A - C - K - P - O - W - D - E - R - X

I TOTALLY thought you meant you were taking firearms out on a date. I personally don't see anything wrong with this, but would that be considered transporting the gun, or using the gun:p

Not very comprehensive and super precise (some errors and omissions, especially in the 640 series), but in general, skydevaaben is a good site to check.

For dating most British guns, you need to know the London or Birmingham Proof codes, which is the letters and numbers around the X in the proofmark.
Start a P-H dating thread and it will be a pleasure for me to give you the information you need.

For Tikka serial, try contactting Sako in Finland via their website, as they usually keep very accurate tracking of their production.

The first letter N = NEF, H = H&R, the second letter denotes year of manufacture.

Ilion made barrels will have the last 4 digits of the frame serial number engraved on the left side of the barrel underlug, earlier barrels made in Gardner will have just the last three.
