As a:) fan of Schultz & larsen rifles, for a number of years now I've been on a quest. That quest has been to acquire the 'Big Three' items of co-operation between Schultz & Larsen and Norma. A S&L model 65DL in 308NM, my first of the brand, started the 'addiction'. A couple of years ago, I acquired a model 68DL in 7x61S&H at a local gun show. A few days ago I finally was able to purchase a long sot after model in 358 Norma Magnum.

To 'tide me over' a while back I was tempted and weakened. I purchased a VERY nice Husqvarna model 1651 in 358NM, as pictured on top.
And below it, the 'new kid on the block', S&L model 68DL in 358NM. :DMy life is one step closer to being complete, this March Christmas.

Many thanks to daddylonglegs.

Finally, the quest will slow down (but not end, I'm sure!)
Congrats Johnn! That's a nice baby.

Very nice rifles. They don't look hunted at all. Maybe you can fix that or are they gonna be safe queens?

I tried 'collecting' at one point in time, but it's not for me. And, there have been a couple of items in the safe that appeared to take on that defination but I rectified that situation by putting them up for 'adoption'.

I start out by selecting items in good shape. No, everything I have in the safe, be it rifle, handgun or shotgun, gets used. Not abused but used and looked after.

Thanks guy. On a related issue, before I got my first 358NM I started accumulating 'goodies' in preparation. One of the items I lucked onto was seven boxes of Norma 250gr factory ammo. Question, some of the boxes appear to be loaded with the Norma dual core bullets. The other three boxes, the bullets look like the copper jacketed 250gr Hornady.

Do you know if Norma used another brand of bullet for some of their 358NM ammo? I have the old Norma bullet chart, front & center on the far wall, from that era and I don't see like it on their chart.

Can you clarify this difference??

Well well well, good the search has ended.
Now what are you going to salvate for?
And the moosie, did he accept the new member of the family?
Targets are a must now, go git that beast's barrel warm.

Johnn,
I don't remember when exactly, end of the '70s or early '80s, Norma changed their alloy. This was permitted by advances in copper metallurgy - but they alos lower their velocity of about 70/100 fps. They kept the same basic construction and name Soft Point Semi Pointed (close to Partition and A-Frame). I have something in writings about that somewhere, but can't remember where :)

Moosie is a fond of Schultz & Larsens as I am so the newest clan member got a warm reception, from me and Moosie.
I'm iching to get out and burn some powder but as a good 'Pappa', I'll have to wait until our Daughter and two wee Granddaughters end their visit.

Does this mean you'll be selling the husqvarna?

To go back a few paces, when I first started on my 'quest', I was offered a Husqvarna and later a CZ in 358NM. A Schultz & Larsen was my objective so I turned them both down. When Ted Wagner, Why not?, kindly offered me a Husqvarna, initially I turned it down. It was the Schultz I 'needed'. However, he offered to send me some photos and after I saw it

I 'needed' it. Back to your question, it'll be painful but one day down the road, I will part with it but I want to play with it on the range punching paper and out in the field before I do so. My long winded 'explaination' is for the rationale on my decission.

I have certainly enjoyed viewing your very fine collection of rifles over the years here on CGN, but this time I thought I was watching the A Team..."I love it when a plan comes together". :)

I am working on a much lesser collection (Rem 673s) and just need the 6.5 Rem Mag. My quest continues.....

Nice rifles all but your quest for S&L's is far from over. I don't see any M54 target rifles or M54J and M60 hunters either. ;) LoL You aren't going to take the easy route and stop at the Norma chambering are you? Go for broke and look for another chambered in the original .378 Weatherby

Congratulations on your find Johnn, it is a beautiful rifle.
I know how you must feel as it took me over 30 years to find one particular Winchester and when I finally did the feeling was awesome.
Hopefully someday I can see that fine Schultz up close..

I was living a little north of you,;) Wells, when I saw my first S&L. I was hooked and promised myself:) "one day I'll have one". Years later I picked up a copy of the reloading booklet The Norma Gunbug's Guide. On the front cover are pictured, three cartridges,
- 7x61S&H
- 308NM
- 358NM

;)That group became my 'quest' and now, it's been successfully completed:D. It'll be difficult enough for me to effectively make use of what I have now. Getting much more and I'll end up with some of what's been typified as 'Safe Queens'.
Retired and with that drop in disposable income, I have;) to tame my Champagne tastes down to a beer budget level:p.
I'm hoping for a succseeful Moose draw for a hunt with my son, east of your location.

Check the revision to the moose LEH allotment that was released by the province today. The number of tags to be given out here in 5 was reduced slightly. (Still plenty of wolves even though our provincial predator control officer has been a busy boy this winter)

BTW, technically the .378 Weatherby was also a NORMA cartridge. ;)
