Hey Guys;
So, today was the first time at the range with my brand new Kel-Tec KSG from the latest shipment. I got it from Lanz Shooting Supplies, thank you Sara, thank you Seth (RIP my man, RIP). And, having just received a copy of the new Calibre magazine, with it's review of the KSG, I was a little worried that I would have some issues with jamming &/or double feeds...
So, I put a EOTech EXPS3-0 on it & brought 6 different types of ammo to the range... Here's how it went...
My brother & I set up a target at 25 meters & the first shot with a 7/8oz slug was low & left. Adjusted 10 clicks up & 10 clicks right, shot again, still low & left... Another 5 click up & right, BANG ON!!!
After this, we proceeded to put more 7/8oz and then 1oz slugs through the gun WITHOUT any issue.
We then ran two types of 00Buckshot, it ran WITHOUT any issue.
We then ran two types of Winchester birdshot through it & experienced the first issues with the gun & 'sticky' extraction while running the 7.5 size shot. Remember, these are CHEAP shells & if you pumped the gun with authority, it still extracted them & continued to feed, fire, extract and eject the rest of the cartridges in the mag tubes.
Again, the ammo used was all 2&3/4 inch in this order;
(1) Remington Slugger High Velocity 7/8oz slugs 1800fps
(2) Remington Slugger 1oz slugs 1560fps
(3) Federal Magnum 9 pellet 00Buck 1325fps
(4) Winchester Magnum 12 pellet 00Buck
(5) Winchester Heavy Game Loads 1&1/8oz #6shot
(6) Winchester Super Speed 1oz #7&1/2 shot (This was the ammo that gave us some extraction 'stickyness'...)
What I noticed about my KSG... It is somewhat clumsy to load, having to turn the gun over to load it & it takes forever to load 15 shells... But remember, once it's loaded, you can shoot it all week... HA HA HA
On top of that, it cut me! Yup, the molding marks to the rear of the pistol grip were rough enough that the recoil 'removed' the skin off my knuckle on my thumb! OUCH! But, again it's a quick fix with some attention to the issue on the work bench...
Recoil was NOTICIBLY less than expected & we were impressed with it's quick handling. It shoulders & points very nice. Once you fire the first 8 rounds, a quick flick of the switch gives you access to the last 7 rounds in the second tube. I did not have any trouble with the switch, even with the mag tubes fully loaded, you could easily select the mag tube of your choosing.
So, there you have it, my review. IMHO the KSG gets a solid THUMBS UP and an 'A' grade from me, and it would have had a "A+" if it had not skinned my knuckle! (Ya ya, I know, cry me a river, ha ha...) Without a single fail to function in over 100 rounds, I'm a HAPPY CAMPER!!!
As for further upgrades... I just ordered & will be installing a Magpul afg2 angled foregrip & BUIS, along with a choke adapter so I can use Rem Chokes... And then I'm going TURKEY HUNTING!
Cheers
Jay
