Hey Guys;

So, today was the first time at the range with my brand new Kel-Tec KSG from the latest shipment. I got it from Lanz Shooting Supplies, thank you Sara, thank you Seth (RIP my man, RIP). And, having just received a copy of the new Calibre magazine, with it's review of the KSG, I was a little worried that I would have some issues with jamming &/or double feeds...

So, I put a EOTech EXPS3-0 on it & brought 6 different types of ammo to the range... Here's how it went...

My brother & I set up a target at 25 meters & the first shot with a 7/8oz slug was low & left. Adjusted 10 clicks up & 10 clicks right, shot again, still low & left... Another 5 click up & right, BANG ON!!!

After this, we proceeded to put more 7/8oz and then 1oz slugs through the gun WITHOUT any issue.

We then ran two types of 00Buckshot, it ran WITHOUT any issue.

We then ran two types of Winchester birdshot through it & experienced the first issues with the gun & 'sticky' extraction while running the 7.5 size shot. Remember, these are CHEAP shells & if you pumped the gun with authority, it still extracted them & continued to feed, fire, extract and eject the rest of the cartridges in the mag tubes.

Again, the ammo used was all 2&3/4 inch in this order;
(1) Remington Slugger High Velocity 7/8oz slugs 1800fps
(2) Remington Slugger 1oz slugs 1560fps
(3) Federal Magnum 9 pellet 00Buck 1325fps
(4) Winchester Magnum 12 pellet 00Buck
(5) Winchester Heavy Game Loads 1&1/8oz #6shot
(6) Winchester Super Speed 1oz #7&1/2 shot (This was the ammo that gave us some extraction 'stickyness'...)

What I noticed about my KSG... It is somewhat clumsy to load, having to turn the gun over to load it & it takes forever to load 15 shells... But remember, once it's loaded, you can shoot it all week... HA HA HA

On top of that, it cut me! Yup, the molding marks to the rear of the pistol grip were rough enough that the recoil 'removed' the skin off my knuckle on my thumb! OUCH! But, again it's a quick fix with some attention to the issue on the work bench...

Recoil was NOTICIBLY less than expected & we were impressed with it's quick handling. It shoulders & points very nice. Once you fire the first 8 rounds, a quick flick of the switch gives you access to the last 7 rounds in the second tube. I did not have any trouble with the switch, even with the mag tubes fully loaded, you could easily select the mag tube of your choosing.

So, there you have it, my review. IMHO the KSG gets a solid THUMBS UP and an 'A' grade from me, and it would have had a "A+" if it had not skinned my knuckle! (Ya ya, I know, cry me a river, ha ha...) Without a single fail to function in over 100 rounds, I'm a HAPPY CAMPER!!!

As for further upgrades... I just ordered & will be installing a Magpul afg2 angled foregrip & BUIS, along with a choke adapter so I can use Rem Chokes... And then I'm going TURKEY HUNTING!

Cheers
Jay

Great review jay! Good to hear we have another hands on fan! Worth the wait I see! I put a few boxes of the cheap federal target loads and never had a single issue. Glad to hear you like it and welcome to the club!

My Kel-Tec KSG review

Very nice! IIRC your only allowed 2+1 when hunting? That really bites for a shotty with such a high mag limit.

Is anyone ever going to run an honest 10 000rds thru one of these in the next 4-7 months so that we can find out just how good they are...cause until then it's just speculation! LOL!

Fishingismylife...if you keep shooting with that posture you'll always have a fudged shoulder! Rotate your feet and body a little more to the right and lean into the gun so that the tip of your nose is sticking out past the tip of your left toes. Look at how Jay is shooting in his video...about as perfect as it gets!

I'm 6'7 and at my range they have these stupid boards that come down so I have to shoot like I was very uncomfortable or I would be blasting 2x4's about 10 feet infront of me, it's a crappy range for shotgun target shooting

These KSG range reports are nothing but propaganda....no one should believe them....sell your KSG immediately........to me.

Sure...I just ordered 104 cases (26 000rds) from Challenger and have enough supplies here to reload another 10 500rds...but if I'm going to supply the ammo I'll be shooting it! :)

BTW, 10 000rds is nothing for a real gun so I don't want to hear any crying about wear and tear on that KSG!!! Hahaha!

Ok...you can shoot it...actually I have 2, so come down, bring 10k rounds, we can knock off 500 each per day, that's only 10 days worth of shooting...no problem, done deal. I bet I can get volunteers to video the whole thing for YouTube. If it breaks down, of to KelTec it goes for failure assessment. Maybe if I ask nicely I can get a small sponsorship...:)

I might take you up on that buddy! But it'll have to be over 5 days at the most...I have a business to run and can't be away for that long not to mention that it will cut into my planned Trap and Sporting Clays shooting!

Oh and if you shoot, you pay for your own ammo...I'm not running any charities here!

I'll bring my 870 Police Max to this test as well, so that when your KSG's break down after about 1 000 rounds, we have something to finish the remaining 9 000+ rounds off. :D

haha HATER! I have 100% confidence in all my KSG's that they will perform just as well side by side with any 870 or especially mossberg shotguns which are the only commercial shotguns to pass the USMC reliability tests
