PETA Plans to Fly Drones That Would 'Stalk Hunters'

I can see charges of interfering with a legal hunt resulting from the use of these drones.

Harassing hunters is illegal in BC, I don't know about the ROC though.

Open season on PITA as far as I'm concerned.

It is illegal to interfere with a hunt in Saskatchewan...but it would be fun to shoot down if I ever see it!! PETA SUCKS!!!

This is their problem ... Imagine them flying that thing over a wealthy hunter with a 100 or 250-1 sheep draw ? Massive Lawsuit that would be easily won, or just criminal charges.

Or over a hunter that paid a 100k for a Desert Bighorn ?. Again though .... 20 min of flight time ? Things a Fk'n joke !

The TandD said:
A remote-controlled aircraft owned by an animal rights group was reportedly shot down near Broxton Bridge Plantation Sunday near Ehrhardt, S.C.

Steve Hindi, president of SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness), said his group was preparing to launch its Mikrokopter drone to video what he called a live pigeon shoot on Sunday when law enforcement officers and an attorney claiming to represent the privately-owned plantation near Ehrhardt tried to stop the aircraft from flying.

"It didn't work; what SHARK was doing was perfectly legal," Hindi said in a news release. "Once they knew nothing was going to stop us, the shooting stopped and the cars lined up to leave."

He said the animal rights group decided to send the drone up anyway.

"Seconds after it hit the air, numerous shots rang out," Hindi said in the release. "As an act of revenge for us shutting down the pigeon slaughter, they had shot down our copter."

He claimed the shooters were "in tree cover" and "fled the scene on small motorized vehicles."

"It is important to note how dangerous this was, as they were shooting toward and into a well-travelled highway," Hindi stated in the release. He said someone from SHARK called the Colleton County Sheriff's Department, which took a report of the incident.

The Colleton County Sheriff's Department filed a malicious damage to property incident report.

According to the report, Hindi told the responding deputy the group's remote-controlled aircraft "was hovering over U.S. 601 when he heard a shot come from the wood line. The shot sounded to him that it was of small caliber."

The incident report went on to state that "once shot, the helicopter lost lift and crash landed on the roadway of U.S. 601."

The deputy noted in the report that he was unable to speak to anyone at Broxton Bridge Plantation following the incident.

Hindi estimated damage to the drone at around $200 to $300.

Hindi said he will seek charges against those who shot down the drone.

"This was SHARK's first encounter with the Broxton Bridge Plantation, but it will certainly not be the last," Hindi said in the release. "We are already making plans for a considerably upscaled action in 2013."

God save us from the bleeding hearts, I swear they think nature is like a Disney movie. I've lost track of how many times I've had to explain how much better domesticated life is for most animals, what with the free food, medical care, protection from predators... and as for hunting, while I don't condone cruelty, I don't find hunting to be cruel, animals hunt each other already.

PETA is a group of hypocrites. Knowing that in winter time, some wolves are starving to death, no single person from this group would volunteer his/her body to feed the hungry wolves.

Agreed. Look up PITA putting down stray dogs and cats. Collect the money, kill the animals.
Penn and teller did a Bull#### Episode on it.

I am not sure of Canadian laws regarding multirotors (drones). From what I have read the U.S. FCC has banned all commercial use of them. Recreational users are limited to a 400' ceiling for aircraft safety reasons. It would be interesting to see if someone was to claim they shot one down exceeding that height in the name of Homeland Security.

They will soon get tired of replacing the shot up ones, just remember to wear a mask.
Unless it's streaming the footage live, it would just be recording to the SD card on the SLR camera, which means if somebody shoots the propellers only, they will have a new SLR camera if it doesn't fall too hard.

PETA is only interested in getting attention. Attention = money. They probably have little interest in doing this for real. But they like to tug at your chain.

I'd like my own remote controled Raptor....I wonder If I'd bankrupt PETA shooting down enough drones to get all the neccessary undamaged parts?

That's exactly first thing that came to mind. It's more of a publicity stunt than actually trying to catch illegal hunters
