OK, here's the deal. I have a Remington 58 Sportsman Magnum that has had the barrel chopped to 19" and I can't get it to feed a second shot at all (even with 3" shells - 2.75" will barely open the action). I'm wondering which of the guru's out there with some experience with these things can steer me in the right direction.

Do I need more gas or less spring??? Any assistance is greatly appreciated...

Many years now and seem to recall. Did you adjust the gas system?? I thought the 58 had adjustment with the mag cap for light loads

here it is

good old google

"The gas system was not self regulating but required the shooter to adjust the regulator to match the loads used. This regulator also acts as a magazine cap has a Hi & a Low setting. This is regulated by twisting the end cap to where the marks line up for Hi or Low. This means that if you are using a "trap load", your should use a Low setting, & where a heavy duck load is used the Hi setting would be more appropriate. If you allow the cap to get stuck between settings & fire the gun, the cap will blow off the regulator base. If this happens the gun will probably not function properly with any load, as it is trying to utilize both the Hi & the Low port holes. The internal holes are different in size & quantity of numbers for each of the gauges."

and here is the gas port sizes
I would work with the 26 " number and very slowly bump up if needed based on a per inch change they indicate between the 28 and 26 since as they say too big and the barrel is toast

You're losing gas somewhere. Check the position of the dial on the mag cap and check that the gas ports aren't plugged. The end of a "19 barrel on a 58 is only 6" past the gas ports. Could it be that the load has left the barrel before enough gas has moved through the ports to cycle the action? Did this problem start after the barrel was chopped?

1. Probably;

2. I don't know as I never fired it uncut...

Thanks for all the ideas guys...

Note the "again"... ; - )

Cool only asked since you are probally the 1st one in history that has taken one fully apart first time and not say they had the piston fly across the room or complain about getting the yoke stud back into the piston . Then again maybe I misunderstood your post .
Any how good luck and I hope you find your problem

Yes probally real old fart adult since not a model young guns would normally be up to speed on. I have not shot one or had one apart since the late 60's but it is slowly coming back to me. Once the 1100's came out these were pushed aside and too bad since they were really not a bad gun. Keep us posted on how you make out. Good Luck

Well he was older than me and I'm trending toward "old-fartedness" myself so yeah, I guess. I'll let everyone know how it goes...

The 58 has been obsolete for 40 years but the problem is the short barrel. The gas ports will have to be drilled larger in order for enough gas to operate the action... it should be done a little at a time until it functions correctly. Have a gunsmith do it, supply a box of shells. If it is drilled too large the action will suffer from slamming too hard.
