Well I just finished packing for my first African safari. We leave tomorrow evening. We arrive in Windoek on Sunday afternoon. We are hunting plains game for ten days. When I get back I will post pic's.

Good luck...our first trip to Africa was a Namibian plains game hunt as well. Prepared to come back addicted to Africa!

I too have hunted Namibia and it is a game rich country with very good quality on a lot of animals...........good luck and shoot straight. Don't expect a lot of bang flops on African animals 'cause it ain't gonna happen. Always try and get 2 in, don't be over confident or complacent..........these are by and far the toughest animals on the planet to take off their feet, even with perfect shooting...hit 'em again. You're not meat hunting so try and take out both shoulders if you can.....Just my experience with African game, and I've taken well over 100 animals there. Above all have fun and prioritize your wish list, work on the most important animals to you, first.
One more little word of advice, if I may, remember YOU run this hunt, YOU are the one paying the money, if anything is not up to your liking or standards, SAY SOMETHING to your PH. This could be anything from food to beverages to ethics.

Enjoy the first of many, you will be going back, it's just a matter of when.

Have fun! As if I have to say that. A first safari is a wonderful experience, nothing like it. - and we want a full report when you get back please!

Hey Dogleg......every time someone mentions Africa you give the same advice about smiling at the local girls. Is there a story here we need to hear...............HHHMMMMMM? I think there's more to this advice than it would seem on the surface.

Not to savvy on african safari's....If one was to plan one how much $$$ should be budgeted for the basic safari itself?? I really would like to know if it is atall possible for regular semi poor folk!! Thanks !!

Ok, we were at one of the many Zimbabwe roadblocks when I saw a 3/4 good looking black girl eyeing me up. Without thinking I smiled back. Apparently that's all the invitation she needed because she was determined to jump in the truck with us. That was a little awkward since how do you go about throwing a cop out of your truck? We couldn't just peel out of there since we were at a roadblock and how would that go down? Couldn't very well take her with us either. I quickly took up the hobby of cloud formation viewing and let the PH talk me out of the situation while the trackers snickered.

After that he advised me to not smile at the local girls.

In a general sort of way a modest plains game hunt costs about the same a nice quad or snowmobile, buffalo hunts tend toward the price of a secondhand 4X4 pickup and elephant about the same as a new one. Not exactly cheap, but within reach if you want it bad enough.

Wow big bucks....But the memories would last a lifetime.....Certainly longer than a 4 wheeler thats for sure....Probably a great trip to retire on as a present to myself !! Thanks for the info.

nicely summed up!

I knew there was a story...........leading on the poor black girls, eh? Yep they see rich white hunters with PHs and it's $$$$$$$$ in their eyes, but a black female cop Dogleg, REALLY?

Man I'd love to see/hunt Africa before she or I are gone.

There is nothing in the hunting world to compare, leveractionjunkie, I've made 7 trips now and have at least 2-3 more to attain what I want. Don't wait, every year the available areas get less and less, I understand Botswana is now closed to hunters.......who knows who's next. I borrowed the money for my first hunt and will never regret it. Hell you borrow money to buy pick ups and quads and boats, why not an African hunt whose memories will outlast all the motorized vehicles you could ever buy.

In Kenya a lot of the roadblocks are just local folks trying to extort a little "road tax" from passing motorists. They tend to leave the safari company vehicles alone though.

Believe me I hear and understand everything you are saying and it does make sense to me. I have a young family now though and cant see putting my dreams ahead of theirs. Hopefully through my SCI contributions and those of others, there will be some of Africa left for when the kids have gone to college, and I've welded enough #### to earn a retirement gift. A friend just received his mounts from his Namibian trip last year, and he's already planning on returning in a couple years. As I was helping him unpack and hang them I joked about maybe tagging along with him soI could maybe shoot a warthog or baboon while he looks for his first Dugga Boy :)
