I'm looking at picking up a new 6" S&W 686 when I get back from vacation in June. My local guys have a new one for $799.00 plus tax. I won't pay that though. I'll get some kind of deal, either a price reduction, or some other stuff thrown in to sweeten the deal (ammo, speedloaders, et cetera).

So, would this be a good deal?

thats an excellent deal...

how are you going to sweeten the deal exactly? ask them or is this already predetermined because you know the guys?
if you dont know them and just want a better price, i wouldn't ask... only because thats a sweet deal(they go easily for 900 over)
and asking for further deals or gifts may insult them.

Just a point of comparison, Epps (site sponsor up top) got a whole batch of S&W 686s last week. They sold almost all of them immediately for about $850 for the 6" barrel, $875 in 4,2", and $900 for the Deluxe. These prices would be plus tax and shipping, as applicable.

Unless these guys are your very good friends, that one won't last 'til June.

Thanks for the quick replies. It sounds like I'm going to go put a hundred down tomorrow. As far as sweetening the deal, I have a good relationship with them, built on many firearms purchases lol. They also have a used 586 with an adjustable front sight and a round butt. I think it was $599.00. Being used, the margin for deal working is a bit better, but I prefer the 686.

You might want to look at the 686p, 7 shots, the notchs for the catch on the barrel are between the holes of each chamber instead of been just align on top of each chamber where it is less thicker....., not much metal width let in between on top of each chamber in a 6 shots barrel......

You should tell me the name/number of this dealer, and I can tell you for $800 it won't last until tomorrow!!

I paid about $900 for my 4.2" a few months ago and was glad to get it at that price - they are hard ot find in 4.2" at all. 6" is more common, but i doubt you will ever find new for under the $800 you already located.

Yup, I'll definitely be putting some cash on that pretty piece tomorrow... Before the gun nuts flock there.

Okay, I've got another question regarding this gun... How do I tell my wife I bought another one? She still brings up on a weekly basis that I bought two guns within a month of each other without telling her first. And she managed to extract a promise from me that I won't buy another without consulting her (I must have been drunk).

ask her to pretty please give you back your own testicles that you were born with, to gently reinstall your spine, and - lastly - show her the T4 slip to confirm that you are actually capable of earning money and therefore should be able to spend it (responsibly) without having to ask someone else for permission.

Just give me the name/number/website of the vendor and I'll fix your dilemma

you've still got to wait for the transfer, time to drop a hint at how good of a deal it is and how you're actually SAVING money by buying it now.

There are always three prices... the price I told my wife it was, the price that it should be, and the price I actually paid.

You really have to know how to properly set these buys up. Usually a few weeks before I commit to an actual purchase, I mention to my wife that I am thinking about buying a new gun that I absolutely have to have. After the slightly cool period, which can last for up to a week and she has accepted the fact, I then tell her that no, I'm not going to buy it. Many more things we need far worse than a new handgun. Do this scenario a cpl times (usually thats all it takes) and then maybe mope a little bit and finally she will come out and tell to go buy a gun for gawds sake, you deserve it. Reluctantly agree. Just don't go to the gunsafe and pull it our and say I bought it last week.
