I came across this vid as I was searching .17hmr varmit hunting. If you read the comments there are lots of hunters giving the poster flack over huning with dogs as if its unethical. I've never hunted before, but as I understand it people have been huting with dogs forever. I dont see the issue myself. What are your guys thoughts?

There is no other way to successfully hunt cats in wilderness locations. You might get lucky once in a while and run across one at shootable ranges but for every one you actually see, let alone get a shot at, there will be 99 that see you first.

Same goes for hunting birds. Especially migratory game birds. Even pheasants and grouse are best hunted with dogs.

In BC, dogs can be used to hunt deer but must be on a leash.

I believe the video raises questions regarding what we should be hunting not on how we hunt. I have hunted birds with dogs for years and some of my best memories are being in the field with a good dog. However, I am unsure on why we hunt critters like Bobcats, or any wild cat, for that matter. I know i will get flamed for saying this, but just because we can does not mean we should.

We do our causes no favours when antis watch these type of videos. Tree a cat with dogs, shoot it out of the tree, and take picture of dead cat with a big smile, seems like a recipe for a losing argument. Perception is reality.

For me, I don't see a problem with it. With all the hunting I do for birds, using a hunting dog means almost zero lost game!

Cheers
Jay

I don't find a huge need for hunting.. enough people killing animals already with taking away habitats ect. Don't call me a hippy. I just don't find the need...

As for hunting with dogs, I see no problem in this video. Be aware the dogs could get hurt. This is definitely a lot easier of a way of hunting... I could see hunting with dogs if you NEED to hunt for food. As for sport it would seem to me to take the sport out of it.

Again, id rather see the bobcat get away... gorgeous creature. Go blast ground hogs or tree rats something there is an abundance of lol. (Flame suit on for not being a hunter but liking guns)

If the dog(s) are at serious risk then I say no to the idea.

Also having a well trained dog should be mandatory and there should be some sporting certification for the dog. Lets see how well the owner handles their dog and how well the dog responds.

I have been out grouse hunting with a .22 rifle and suddenly surrounded by a large pack of untrained curs looking for trouble and their owner too lazy to do more then shout "bad dogs" from his truck.

Not fun.

Myself, I refuse to impose my version of "ethical opinion" on other hunters using whatever legal means to take game in thier jurisdiction. Every province and territory has it's own idiosyncracies born out of unique local needs and traditional practices.

Well, for one thing, Bobcats, Lynx and Cougar are darn good eating. They have incredible fur. Try some for a lining in a parka hood.

Another thing, very few cats get shot by humans. More cats are killed by other cats and starvation from over population than any other cause.

I know, many think it's much more humane to let an out of control animal population starve to death slowly while wiping out all or most of the species it preys on in the area.

Indiscriminate and irrational hunting is unethical. I will agree with that but some of the anti comments here show a very large lack of credibility and a lot of irrational emotion. Dangerous combination.

That being said, we are all still allowed to have and voice our own opinions. Enjoy whichever firearms related sport you feel suits you. Have fun with it.

I am not anti-hunting. Actually quite the contrary and I will fight for the right for everyone to hunt. I do not suffer form irrational emotion but want everyone to realize that the right to hunt is being scrutinized by antis at the highest levels. We do ourselves no favours when we hunt certain species without proper cause, without restraint in how we advertise the hunt, and without restraint in how we advertise our success or our failure. I will support your right to hunt wildcats with my dying breath but I choose to leave them alone.

Why is it that people who disagree with you are anti's? Seems to be a common theme on CGN.

I have a really sore spot on the type of hunting where a pack of dogs trees the prey and the hunter just comes along and shoots it out of the tree. Personally I don't see that very sporting in my eyes.

If you think hunting is just about the killing, then you need to spend some time with a few hunters and educate yourself. As far as there being a "need" for hunting, there is no "need" for you to own firearms, or a car, or house. All you "need" in life is food, water, air and shelter.

Here in my part of Alberta we are getting overpopulated with cougar and I am a farmer so hunting them is not just sport but economic preservation. And to my knowledge they are the only big game species it's legal to hunt with dogs in Alberta. I say if it's legal where you are have at 'er
