Looking into buying a .308 hunting rifle for big game. Probably be using it for whitetail and moose here in New Brunswick. Just curious as to if a .308 is capable of dropping a moose out here. Won't be taking any crazy long shots, only what I felt comfortable with.

You're good to go.
Just don't go ask'in 'bout what size bullets to use.
Then you'll fer sure start a goll dang kerfuffle among the colour'in group here.
Well chit, I might as well start it.
I use 150 pills in my Ruger tree oh ate.

Okay I was just checking as I have had some people tell me that it's just capable but not suitable for it. I always liked it as a caliber so I thought I would go with it instead of 30-06 My grandfather has told me plenty of stories about moose and his 30-30.

My BLR in .308 has dropped its share of moose. No worries. Just to stir the pot, i load 180's for swamp donkeys....

I`m thinking that the 308 win is the most underestimated cartridges out there. It is in my opinion one of the most accurate cartridges ever developed

Like most other short action non-"Magnum" cartridges. It's smaller brother the 243 win. with 100g loads are very underestimated as to their ability to harvest big game.

Back in the day I've heard stories about shooting moose in the lungs with a .22 LR and just follow it around for a little while till it dies. So I think a 308 should do the job!

I have 3 and one is going to my son this year, the Sako 85, I also have a Cooper 54 and a Remmington 5R-Mil-Spec. All are great shooters and you can get .308 in a short action, where as a 30-06 would need a long action. I will be using the Cooper this year on the mainland (I am in BC) and my .243 on Vancouver Island (small Blacktails). Get one you won't be sorry. Cheers Roscoe

With factory ammunition, the advantage 30-06 has over .308 is marginal at best. The .308 is just fine for Deer/Moose/Black Bear.

Google: Myth Busting Big Game Calibers - you will find one of the best reports complete with charts on many calibers, with a very strong argument for the 308 as not only one of the best, but the optimum all round cartridge. It makes for a very interesting read. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for moose. Recoil is moderate, lots of factory ammo, plenty of rifles.
